HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Post by Halfbreed » Fri Dec 21, 2007 3:55 am

Hey guys I was driving my neon home from work tonight and the wierdest thing happened. When I was driving on the hihgway I went over a bump and when I came down my car jolted forward as if the tires did not come down after the bump and then hit the pavement. Then after I got off the highway and was driving down a residential street my entire car went nuts! It started shaking uncontrollablely, like I was driving on the rumble patches on the side of the highway. So I pulled over and put it in park, and once I set the parking brake it stopped shaking. Then I put the hazards on and drove home and it was fine. I have absolutely no idea what it could be. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

 was it still shaking/vibrating when in park, then stopped when the brake was applied? Not that I have an answer just trying to clarify if it was engine vibrations or suspension/transmission. Is it ATX or MTX?

It could have been mud or something that got cought in the tires and unbalanced them.

Another silly question which could end up being really important....

Are the lug nuts tight?

My Lower control arms weren't in the best shape, I was meaning to replace them. Next it's an automatic. Next no animal for sure but sure did feel like I hit one. My lug nuts are tight. It was still shaking until the parking brake was put on.

So you engaged the parking brake while stopped and the vibrations stopped? Sounds like engine to me. Did anything happen when you put it in Park? Is it still doing it now?

Hey guys I started work on it this morning and did a quick diagnostic. I was lazy and got my oil changed by a shop...big mistake I think what happened was my oil level was too high. I know with the neon engines if you over fill the oil it's bad news. Could that be why it started shaking like that??? Ya once the parking brake was engaged it stopped. When I put it in park the vibrations were less violent but still there. It's not doing it anymore, it appears to be driving normal. I just drained some oil to bring it to the correct level.

it is possible that the force pushed a lot of oil into the head of it which 'could' make it run rough ...

double check the oil level again ... less you put more then 5 quarts in there it shouldn't have been overfilled (less you have a blown head gasket and have water being dumped into the oil)

Hit bump and motor starts shaking... possibly overfull situation could have caused some shake if a large enough wall of oil hit the crank, but I can't see it continue to shake after it was slung off. How are your plug wires? If one of them was brittle or has a break in the conductor a bump may cause it to move enough to cause a hard miss. May not have missed enough to set a CEL. May have been some freak occurence, only time will tell, either It will happen again or it won't

I put an entire gallon last oil change...didn't notice a lick of difference.

My catch can was a little more active though.

Well my car is super active, I do about 2,500km a month. Yea my spark plugs and wires are in amazing condition I checked them this morning. I was worried it was the oil because I heard if you overfill these engines the pistons will shoot through the head. Hmmmm I hope maybe it was a freak occurance, becuase I can't seem to figure out why or what it was. Never felt it before...

Was the shaking everywhere or was it confined to one side/area of the car?

You only put in 1 gallon, or you put in 1 gallon too much? Either of those would be bad for your car. :tardbang:

Chris, you probably need to state that 1 gallon=4qts. 2.0L takes 4.5qts. although i'm sure that ANYBODY would rather run 1/2qrt. low than 4qrts. over

High school math owned me.

I put just a gallon. I thought that was too much?

Day before yesterday my friend did the oil change and put 4.5 quarts for me. I get my oil changes at a honda dealership hahaha
