Interference Engines FTL!

Post by gilly02le » Mon Dec 24, 2007 12:54 am

Thought i'd post up the pics of the damage that occurs when your timing belt breaks.
Pictured Below are my now garbage $240 indy o/s valves. Every last one is now JUNK!

This is why Dodge Daytona Turbo is king.

total non-interference engine. I broke a belt once. Just stopped running, and I rolled to the side of the road. Had the belt replaced the next day and drove the car for another year and a half before it was totalled.

I would like to hear a comfirmation on that, because after seeing the combustion chambers I don't believe it. But definitely a confirmation would be great.

That does indeed suck. How many miles were on your timing belt? Also...I'm curious to see if the water pump froze and that's what made the belt break. When you take it all apart, you'll want to replace the water pump even if it didn't fail, but I bet it failed (if I was a betting man).

I'll have to let you know, bought this head as i was told i was in good shape, off a running car, clearly, this car was not running, so im trying to get this all sorted out... kinda sucks to have happen around christmas, but hey, at least it wasn't the timing belt on my DD.

If someone told you that the car was running, I'd beat their ass. Timing belt on a neon means new valves, and maybe pistons.

SRT-4 motors are non-interference due to low compression and piston design.
non-interference means that if the belt breaks the pistons won't hit the open valves. An older V-8 Hemi would be an interference motor
In the first gen neons, the dohc had .344 lift on the intake, and .314 on the exhaust. The engine made 170-175hp, but with bigger cams, but do to the timing belt life of 60K, they shorten the lift to achieve it. If your running bigger cams, it's not really the belt that you need to worry about, it's the tensioner. They were never designed for big ass lift cams. The srt4 cams are the smallest of the neon family, hense the 100K timing belt lift span, the belts haven't changed, it's the lift, take that under your wing when going big cams.

Oversteer is when you hit the wall with the back of the car. Understeer is when you hit the wall with the front of the car.
Horsepower is how fast you're going when you hit the wall, and torque is how far you drag the wall with you.

2.0 = Interference
2.4 = Non-Interference
This past month we have had 3 2.0's in the shop with blown belts, but they were all related to water pump failure's. With that said, chances are your valves might look like the above post after this happens. So when your in there doing the repairs DO NOT get a cheap ass water pump to save money, spend the money and get a good water pump thats not a reman, get a new pump!
