How To: Ghetto Cai Splash Guard

Post by kevo » Tue Jan 01, 2008 11:19 am

Tools needed

-1 spare stock intake resonator box
-1 cutting tool such as a hacksaw, bandsaw or even a dremel with reinforced cutting disks.
-1 socket wrench with sockets for removing the resonator box elbow (sorry, dont remember the size)
- Marker, scribe, painters tape. Basically anything to begin to mark where you will begin cutting.
- 1 file, sandpaper or dremel with sanding drum to remove burs in your cut.

sorry for this pic, its the only one i could find of the stock resonator box.

By not im sure you have installed your aftermarket cold air intake. You will notice you now have a gaping hole where your old intake resonator box was located at and in it's place you have your afermarket filter. not the best place to have the filter if you navigate through water.

First you want to remove the snorkel elbow from the resonator box. remove the bolt and simply turn the elbow, it should come right off.

Next you want to look at the lower half of the box. You should have a large curve near the bottom. this is the area where we are going to begin marking our cut.

Just below the curve you want to measure at least 1/2 inch down. I recommend doing 3/4 to 1 full inch afterwards. You want to mark your cut there.

Go ahead and begin cutting. Afterwards simply clean up your burs using sandpaper, file or dremel.

Afterwards test fit your cai. the stock K&N and AEM filters are rather big. You want to make sure it will not rub against your filter. The guard is now only held on with one bolt, it will wobble a bit. If you believe it will rub then simply cut a little further down.

Not the absolute greatest product but its stock looking and it gets the job done quite nicely.
Here are pics of my finished guard.

Hmm, they must have changed them, because mine was made so it pulled the air through the box, not just past an opening in the tube. the inlet and outlet were the same positions. The bottom of mine was removed by impact of ? before I got the car, so it was basically getting air from the road surface. So I guess if you're lucky enough to have the bottom piece you could do the mod!

occasional demons is correct though. There are some airboxes that do not look like this. I am sure there is still a way to do the mod though.

If you do indeed do it, regardless of what style airbox you have, please post pics.
