use a very heavy grit (40-60) to grind out very uneven surfaces(like for grinding down nubs and other kinds of small raised points)

use a heavy grit (80-120) to level a surface

use 200-400 to smooth and feather a surface (prep for primer/paint)

use 800-1000 to get a very smooth surface

i went over a few nights ago and helped him a lil big, i believe we were using 120 on a sander to get rid of the stock "grain" on the door panels...

not sure what he uses otherwise, lol
