heh i have a laptop i carry in my truck .. does that count? ...
i had thought about it a few times .. even gathered up the components to run one (minus the LCD screen) ... was setup ready to go with 4 2 gig compactflash cards and adapters so they would work with ATA ...
but then realized that i didn't really have a need for it ...

well depends on how much music u listen to 1TB isnt much... because alot of ppl that do this also put movies onto it and run high def GPS map programs.. so it eats up quick... mine is almost full!

2.4ghz Intel processor
120GB IDE notebook hard drive

Onboard Video Card
PCIMCA Sound Blaster 24 bit Live Adapter

Not sure if i believe this, 1 MP3 = around 3 - 10 MBlawhon wrote:A guy in my car club has a carputer in his Lancer, 7in lcd screen..........mostly laptop componets........but think he has over a 1000 gigs of music, what ever is after a gig he says. All he's running with the computer is music and gps.
Just for fun we will say ALL of his songs are atleast 10MB (most are closer to 3MB)
1000Gigs = 1,024,000 MB
So 10 X 1,024,000 = 102,400 Songs on the LOW end and 341,333 on the High end...
My father-inlaw is a DJ and has ONLY 25,000 Songs and that only takes up 300Gigs...... (thats with movies and Apps)
Most songs ive ever seen WITHOUT duplicates was 78,000 Songs and thats not even close to 300,000.....
I think your friend is telling you stories
He said Music Not Movies, Using a TB is easy, I got almost 3TB filed between movies, Music, Pictures and Programs....... But 1TB worh of music is Over kill... And illegal.. This post is way old...
But I would like to see pics of car computers. I think it would be cool.
But kind of hard on the electronics to constantly be shutting on and off.

You're close aint ya? Come check out mine son... Hibernating is less abusive than a full hard boot, its what I use, plus the system boots a lot faster coming out of hibernation...

i beg to differ. i have well over 9000 store-bought cds from my days as a dj, and everything i encode is at 320k or higher (apple lossless). it is not hard to fill up 1tb with music and certainly can be done legally. someday i will start ripping my 12k+ albums as well...

I never said impossible but not likely, 9000 store bought cds? Thats alot of money there... and about 180,000 songs if they all got 20 per disk...... For a DJ thats bad ass but for most people thats ovrkill

Are you coming to Carlisle Matt. If so I'll see it then. If not I'll have to go check it out some time.NiteHawk wrote:You're close aint ya? Come check out mine son... Hibernating is less abusive than a full hard boot, its what I use, plus the system boots a lot faster coming out of hibernation...
Wouldn't hibernation be hard on the battery.

When a computer hibernates it preserves the session and shuts down the computer. Then when you fire it back up, it's ready pretty quick and your stuff from the last session is ready to go.

Yeah I will be at carlisle. Hibernation doesn't kill the battery. You can unplug a computer that's inhibernation for a very long time and it will still come out of hibernation like nothing ever happened...
What you need is a power supply that is smart... I'm running an M4ATX. Once the computer goes into hibernation, all of the rails shut off except the 5v rail. 60 seconds later, that shuts off too, so now there is no power draw at all(actuallý 20mA draw, but that's not enough to drain a battery)

That's probably from the motherboard led
9000 CDs, mother of god!
I'll probably be throwing my mini-itx board into my center console to have an active MS computer in the car so I don't have to haul my netbook in there. Ideally, I'm looking into a touch screen between my visors.
CarMP3 is a great resource as mentioned above. They have no moving mechanical parts for vibration resistance. Also, they are more resistant to temperature changes with no close tolerances. between heads and platters.

yep, it is a lot of cds
while they might not all have 20 songs each a large portion of them were trance / house / progressive / d-n-b / etc etc are are, on average, 7-8 mins long. that is one huge file when encoded at 320kbps or higher.
i am still trying to find good software for ripping my 12,000+ pieces of vinyl. so far every one i have tried has left me wanting more.
I have had 2 in my car but right now I don't have one. Not hard to do and not all that expensive either. I did both of mine with install for about $450 and everyone that saw it at shows thought it was a $3K install. it was nice and clean and did a lot of stuff. Main reason I did it was for GPS and music library. now my phone does all that and I just have a windows mount for now. great fun when I had them. I will do another one in the future though.
