Retrofits used OEM projectors from higher end cars to achieve very even beam distribution, very wide beam, and sharp cut offs. Some of these projectors have high and low beams as well (which factors into the cost). The ebay ones are mass produced projectors which are in comparison low quality. Retrofits do not need to cost 1400 dollars, they can range between 400 and upward. So a "retrofitted headlight" can mean a bunch of things, but they will all out preform the ebay headlights, with a cost to match if you pay someone to make them for you.

My guess is the ones that are $1400 are actual HID lights, as the ones on Modern are not.

the ones on modern's site use H1 halogen bulbs for the lowbeam projectors and highbeam reflectors. They do not come with HID. (though you can install an H1 HID kit in them to make the lowbeam projectors HID)

a retrofit 99% of the time uses OEM xenon projectors from one of many vehicles and can range in price drastically. there's very few oem projectors that are not xenon, but one for sure, is a Valeo H7 lowbeam projector, which uses an H7 halogen bulb. i have a set of those here...

retrofits cost a lot because of the cost of parts and labor. if you do your own retrofit, then you only have to pay for the parts and you save on the labor, otherwise, you're paying a company to make you a set of headlights.

for those concerned about getting the best headlight output possible, go with a retrofit. if you cold care less........well...why are you even reading this then? lol

i could get into why certain projectors are more expensive, but thats for another topic for another day...
