Single bead or Triple?

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

Single bead or Triple?

Post by soul_sword34 » Tue Jan 15, 2008 7:46 pm

Just doing the usual, “can save money here, can save there”, thing on my project. Was just thinking, since I was going to buy magnum valves with the triple bead lock. What are the advantages of the triple verses the ES single bead lock? Can my stockers from my ES work just as well with a little cleaning? Would save me about $90. Anyone.

IIRC all 2gn's got the triple bead lock. All 1gn's got single bead locks. All aftermarket (stainless) valves are single bead locks.

The head I just pulled from a 2000 had triple bead locks.

Not quite. Both non-mag 2gn SOHC head's I've had apart have had single bead valves. Magnums were always triple, but it seems like standard heads got a mix....not sure why.

sou_sword34, I wouldn't see any problem with using single bead lock valves from your old head. Just make sure all the seats look good, and then clean them up with a soft dremel tool. You'll have to use the retainers from the single bead valves though. The Magnum retainers don't fit right on the single bead locks. So, use Magnum springs, with single bead valves and single bead retainers.

Here's a little info I found on the triple bead locks from the SRT-4 Forum.
in an OEM application they help shake the Retainer and help Rotate the Valve. This is great for an OEM application.

For any sort of High Performance/Racing Application, you do not want the Retainer to shake.

I bet it was a "running" mid-year change for the 2000 model year.

Mine has the triple beads 2001 ECB engine. the 2001 parts manual list both for the ECB: exhaust - 4648 613 8 ECB Single Bead Lock
4777 150AB 8 ECB NAB, Leaded Fuel
4648 613AC 8 ECB/ECH Triple Bead Lock
Intake:
4648 615 8 ECB Single Bead Lock
4648 615AC 8 ECH Triple Bead Lock
. . . . . . . . . . 8 ECB Triple Bead Lock
Altho they didn't give a PN# for the ECB intake 3 bead.
They also list both retainer and lock styles for the ECB
For those that don't know the ECB is Non-mag and ECH is the Magnum. My guess is it was whatever the flavor of the day happened to be. Or more likely when the supply of surplus parts ran out.../possibly country of destination could play a role also. Who are we to 2nd guess the bean counters?

My 2002 parts manual shows only triple bead locks. 2000 parts manual shows both single and triple.

We run into this at our dealership. It is always better to look, cause when the tech guesses (lazy) it is usually the other choice (thank you Mr. Murphy)
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...
