Generally you'll want whatever gear is 1:1. For those of us with a MTX it'd be 4th since 5th is an OD, if you've got a 4 speed ATX with overdrive then yes, you'd want 3rd.
?You know what the difference between me and you really is? You look out there and see a horde of evil, brain eating zombies. I look out there and see a target rich environment.?

3rd gear for sure...the only reason that 3rd wouldn't work is if for some reason you hit the speed limiter (wheels turning 118mph) before you hit redline. And that won't happen.
In any MTX car that does not have a Magnum ECU, you have to use 3rd gear. 4th hits 120mph around 5200 rpm and the computer with shut you down. I learned the hard way...wasted 3 runs with dyno guy driving the car. I insisted they let me run it a 4th time to see what was going on....and I figured out what was happening right away. They let me do a 5th run in 3rd, and that's where I got my only dyno numbers. I'm looking forward to going back this spring to see how much I can improve it.
Also, the dyno software automatically corrects torque...you don't have to use your 1:1 gear really for any reason.

It's more of an issue with a turbo, where you can heat soak the intercooler on longer pulls. The longest gear you can run is the one you want to if that's not an issue, as you'll get the most resolution. That's debatable, however, because the rotational mass in the transmission and wheels has a greater bearing on the readings when you're in higher gears.

most of the time in the srt its a matter of timing, most of the time stock turbo cars will run more timing in 3rd due to the load being less than 4th, producing better numbers. the higher up the HP ladder you climb the more 4th will become an asset.Wenuden wrote:so going in 3rd in the srt was the right choice? The guy at the dyno shop said that's what gear his co-worker ran his srt in.
This site used to be good....
