Cam ?
Cam ?
Ok. so there's cams FS in the FS forum...
I need to know which is greater/the same and will work great with my 2.0L Non mag
Stock Magnum cam 2002-2004
Comp 400 cam
'95 dodge neon cam
I'm leaning towards a stock mag cam
any expected gains? which is better? and mods needed?
(Obviously the comp 400 is better, but I have a non mag head, and ATX ECU and I'm not looking to modify the head. I'm looking for most power for the least work.)

01 mag cam has a gain of 5-8, the 95 cam has a gain of 3. both cams are aggresive compare with anyother stock neon cam. you can also use both cams with stock valve springs. basically, if you use any other aftermarket cam you'll need to swap the valve springs with titanium springs. you can swap the valve springs while the head is on but requires a special tool, compressed air, and patience.

You can use the Comp 200 with stock springs. I do think the Crane #12 needs hi rev springs though. I'd think as long as you stay in the middle of the cam specs(i.e. not running the Comp 400 or the Crane #14) you could get by with stock retainers as long as you make sure to use new ones.

the comp 400 needs nothing to be modified except for the head and the ecu the comp 400 works great with the stock ecu cause the range of rmp its from 2500 to 6500 so it works great!

but the upgrade would be to magnum springs, which one has to wonder if you use a mag cam in a stock head, shouldnt you be upgrading the sprigs as well?? best bang for cheapest is going to be 95 cam, requires NO spring change, the nest would be 02-04 mag cam, still aggressive, maybe should upgrade to mag springs, then the 01 cam should also upgrade springs, and 400 comp cam deffinately upgrade springs, then crane 14 need to upgrade springs and to take advantage of powerband you need an afx ecu or megasquirt to get the higher rev limit...
my personal opinion, buy the mag springs, the whole set is cheap, even from dealer... then get the comp 400... will get best gains with other mods down the line like a new intake, etc... as well as exhaust. Else you are stuck with 95 cam.

Seems like if you're going to go to all the trouble of pulling the head anyway to add a cam you might as well add new springs. Like I said, retainers are the expensive part if you get them in titanium but quality stock ones should be fine for the milder cams. I'd want new springs just for my own peace of mind.

He doesn't have to pull the head to swap the cam. The PDC box can be moved out of the way and maybe the passenger side of the motor dropped and the cam will clear enough to slide out. I can understand his point of not wanting to do the springs in the car, and not having to spend for a head gasket and possibly head bolts, if he doesn't have to. I guess it all comes down to personal preference and budget restrictions. Yes there are right ways and wrong ways, but improvising is a big part of being a dodge owner. If we could afford the best we wouldn't be having this discussion....
Me, I did it the right way, did my wallet like it? Oh HELL NO!
Edit: IF you keep the springs I would stick to the 02-up mag, but with that being the only change you will not see any earthshattering difference. the only problem is if you do other mods, you will be hitting the rev limiter more often, which in turn will be putting the ECB springs to the limits of their design. The biggest diference IMHO is the ECH springs put less mass at the top of the valve stem (most travel) by the way they're wound. and the stiffer rate doesn't hurt either.
