87 or 89 octane?
I have a 01 sohc Neon and I was browsing over the manual and noticed on page 113 that if you have a 2.0 standard engine that they recommend 87 octane. "The use of premium gasolines will provide no benefit over high quality regular gasolines, and in some circumstances may result in poorer performance." I personally have been using 89, should I just be putting 87 in my neon?
Thanks
Thanks

87 is recomended because thats what the car was designed to run, anything higher than that really wont benifit you on a STOCK motor. Believe it or not, once you start adding a CAI, catback system etc..you will need to start running a little better gas since the computer is starting to see more airflow and fuel it will actually start to advance the timing at a different point.
Our 2GN's computer has a quick learn feature that recalibrates things based on our driving habits...oh crap im starting to ramble now and im getting off toping....anyways....
87 octane(non-reservation) gas is good for a stock motor
89 octane is good for a mildly modded motor
91-93 is good for a motor with more than 10:1 or forced induction

Yeah, if the car isn't tuned for, by that I mean the PCM doesn't have the fuel maps for the higher octane you aren't going to see any difference other than a lighter wallet.
91+ is recommened for the Magnum motors since they are tuned for that octane while the non-Mag engines are tuned for 87.

I just recently switched from running 89 to 92 and I see my car getting better mileage. Its weird, runs smoother and seems to be a little more peppy. Nothing spectacular...but notice it taking off from lights. I would take mine as a mildly modded engine...but it does seem to run much smoother the higher i go.

do you have a magnum or just a plane sohc 2.0?
remember the magnum's run almost 9.8:1 comp. with other factory performance parts and requires 91 or higher octane.....
My old SXT sohc plane jane had basic mods done to it and I got the best performance running 93 Kwick Fill gas(FYI that all I use)...
post your mild mod motor and I will tell you what gas octane will be the best based on my personal experience and the help with a local dyno shop....

Because of the mods you have and California's weather(and cheap quality gas) stick with the 91 octane.
Thanks to california, they are putting ethanol in the gas over here in WNY.
With the minor mods you have, and the intake temps are probably high due to the california weather, run the 91 octane. It will help with detonation...

I use 87 with only bolt-ons. Dont notice a difference with other grades. Hell, even run 87 in a '98 R/T with bolt-ons and it doesnt get any worse mileage or perform any different on the dyno than with 91.

I also think our altitude is different wich ALSO results in defferent readings. Any one in the CALI are want to give him some advice jump in, by the sounds of it im the only one in WNY so whatever I can do ill help....
