02 ACR complete log from begining to now

Post by Kevin_GP » Tue Jan 29, 2008 12:55 pm

I am making a log because lots of people ask me about my setup. Here are some explanations on why I did what I did.

Well, here it is, a 2002 ACR I bought brand new. Car has come along way and I defiantly have a love hate relationship with it. The car started with basic bolt on's, like intake, exhaust, udp, eibach springs and 17 inch wheels. These are the closest pictures I can find from stock form....

Image

Back in ~03, just as the srt-4 was coming out, I decided my car wasn't low enough and the only real coilovers were KW's. NEX was the first company to step up with coilovers so I jumped on it and bought one of the first sets, and they are still going strong on my car to this day. Pictures...

Image
right after I first lowered it, needed an alignment bad

Now, this is when things started to get out of control lol.

Image

Image

Image

Srt-4 turbo, one of the prototype mattdog adapters (I always seem to get things first before they are refined lol), stage 0 injectors, vortech SFMU, walbro pump, all the lines to make a -6 return/feed with spoolboy mods, Spec stage 4 clutch (still hasn't been installed to this day), Srt-4 hotside pipe (fits like crap), custom coldside pipe, turboXS RFL bov, 3inch catless downpipe, aem wideband (again, before the 6-in-1 gauge came out so I am stuck with a black face), autometer phantom 30/20 boost, electric oil psi, pyrometer. Thats about it for the first stage of upgrades. I installed it all myself in Miami on my parents driveway and had 2 weeks to work all the kinks out and then had a 500 mile drive back to Tallahassee to put it to the test. I had a bunch of mishaps with the oil feed line, but when I got back to Tallahassee I found a guy to braze a piece of stainless line between the stock hose end and that fixed that problem once and for all.

Advantages of this setup: I was one of the first and few to use an srt-4 turbo in the days when everyone was buying srt-4's. The setup is cheap, and was pretty damn fast. 9.8:1 compression with a magnum ecu and 8 psi the car ran like a raped ape when everything was working the way it should.
Disadvantages of this setup: nothing fits the way it should lol, you have to make everything work yourself. The car was inconsistant due to the Vortech SFMU and mag computer. My A/F ratios would always be in check (the only thing I could tune with this setup), but the computer would pull timing whenever it felt like it. My car ran BETTER with the CEL on, go figure. My biggest problem with this setup was the transition between open and closed loop. I had tricks and ways to help that transition by jacking up the fuel psi at that point, but I would always hear detonation and my throttle became an on/off switch. So, MegaSquirt is the only way to go right???

Pic's of the old setup....

Random shots from Tallahassee, at this stage in the cars life

Before I get to MS, a side project...

Image

Thats right, an OEM HID projector retrofit. This was at the time when only HakNslash was doing them at the srt-4 board. I figured why not? I wont go into the gritty details about how they were made, but they consist of single Xenon E46 projectors (from say an Audi TT), oem ballast and ignitors, custom wiring harness. Here are some progress shots...

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

This is version one, I learned alot from this process but I rolled with them like this for about a year, more pictures...

Another side project, a bigger intercooler. Up to this point I had a srt-4 stocker and I was getting detonation from that boost transition, so I figure cooler air might help right? I quickly found out that working on my car in Tallahassee was not fun. I basically worked in a parking lot and had to be done before the sun set. No power outlets, no hose, no nothing, just a parking lot. Intercooler is a quickwhips direct fit, it has a 4 inch core and barely fits behind my ACR bumper, I had to cut alot out. Regardless, here is the small upgrade in picture form...

Image

Image

Image

And lastly, a video of my exhaust

Image

Another small upgrade was a bigger intake manifold. Another one of those things where I got lucky and picked up a big log manifold by LoneWolf with perfectly ported ports and an opening for up to a 85mm throttle body.

Image

Image
had to move the vortech SFMU because I didnt have space for it anymore, and decided to relocate the battery while I was at it. Once again, I HATE working on my car up here.

Image

Image

Version 2 of my HID retrofit, I fixed an alignment problem I had, painted them flat black, and added a trim ring....

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image
eyelids are temporary, I ended up testing a set of thick vinyl (thicker than regular vinyl like fiberglass, but more flexable). Regardless, they sucked and didn't stay down so I took them off.

Image

Image

Image

Image
and on the car....

Alas! The downfall of my car!! This bad boy...

Image

I originally mounted it in the glove box but later moved it to under the cd player (I dont have pictures yet). Its MS1 v3.0 board, neon mods by RS Autosports, 3 bar map sensor, once again I get screwed for not waiting to buy my parts and this particular MS came out just before RS offered there "super 420a" unit, which is alot better. I never seem to win when I try out parts before anyone else does, lesson learned.

Image

Image

Image

Image
AHH!

Image

Well, goodbye SFMU, i replaced it with a 1:1

Image

modified coldside pipe for intake temp sensor

Some of the negatives as to why I have a love hate relationship with this automobile. Getting MS was a pain in the ass to get right, but most of it was my fault. Getting the right firmware version and doing things in the right steps gets annoying if you have no patients like me. LOTS of reading later, my car runs good and I turned down the boost to 4 psi. I used authirish's map (thanks Liam in general because I would have smashed my car if it wasn't for your help) and I dumbed down the trimming some and the car in general was running good. Some problems were warmstarts (they seem to take forever for some reason, cold starts are fine), and my Idle control (which I later fixed with the TIP220 mod and it works pretty good). The car was running good but I seemed to have bad luck. This is just a small example...

Image
cool, I get my car running again and some douche decides to slam there door on my car. Pictures didnt come out good but its pretty noticeable.

Image

And last but not least, what I am dealing with now....

Image

Image

The stumbling at idle is hard to hear in the video but you can sort of hear it on revs. Regardless, cylinder 1 is not responsive, I can pull all the injector clips and the car almost dies except for cylinder 1. I changed all the injectors to brand new stage 1's, same exact problem.

Edit, I need to host the datalog screencap

Here is the datalog, I am pulling the injector clips 4-3-2-1, and you can see the stumbles in 4-3-2 and at 1 nothing happens. I am guessing I no longer have compression in that cylinder, as my car now smokes on start ups.

MOVING ON, I have roaches old block and its getting installed along with a bunch of other goods here soon, so hopefully my car will make a comeback or I will drive it off a cliff, please stay tuned.

Also, for a full mod list check out my garage so I don't have to post all that in this huge thread.

Was it hard to do the retro fit? I have HID now, but like the Retro look, just 800 bucks on SRT forums is kinds pricy... I want to see if its possible to do my self..

How hard? Umm it wasn't hard really, just time consuming and you have to be creative with it. The cost of materials if you have the projector, ballast, and headlights is only about 50 bucks. I won't go into whats going on at the srt-4 forums, but yes it is pricy. Also I would like to make it clear I would sell my retrofit in a second, I want to make another set I just want to recover what I lost so I can make a new set.

Thanks for the compliments guys, hopefully I will have some happy updates in a couple of days

Current condition of the car.....

Image

in the shop! Found a shop up here called Cool and Deadly Performance going to be renamed North Florida Performance. They have a bad ass drag civic thats in the low 9's and nitrous beetle. They are familiar with standalones and stuff so my car shouldn't be a problem. I gave them all my parts to install my built block but I am still not sure if my rings/pistons are bad or my vavles are burnt, if the valves are burnt then I need to pay for new ones and machining ect ect, wont be fun. Lets all cross our fingers that its a torched piston.

I HATE leaving my car at a shop, but it needs to be done. I am spending alot of money on this car getting it fixed, so it looks like its going to stay around alittle longer. [/img]

Alittle update, the engine is pulled from the car and the head is still in good shape, it was a torched piston that was causing all my problems. Lucky for me I had bought my built block ahead of time because I anticipated this (the block failing, not burning valves in the head). I think I should get the car back by Friday, so updated pictures should come around then.

I'm glad you did a project log for your car. It'll be a good one for reference to turbo projects for sure. I'm looking forward to the engine being built and done.

Thanks! The guy building my engine is taking pictures of everything that I will post when he sends to me. Soooooo I found out one of my problems were my intake manifold gasket. It looks like it tore around one of the bolt holes and covered half of the cylinder port in cylinder 1  . I guess that was part of my problems, but the headgasket was also bad and cylinder one defiantly looked like crap compared to the rest of them.

I will get the car back Tuesday it looks like. I am sending my MS to Una from the .org and he is going to modify my MS with upgraded coil drivers, 2 step, and possibly MS2 and just check everything over. After that it looks like the only thing stopping me from 300 hp is a stronger wastegate

Looks like the car will only be in the shop for another week. The other major problem I had with my car was bending the K-member on a raised sewer cover in the middle of a dark road. They scraped the road down around the cover so the thing was sticking up a good bit, the next morning they had it all paved again. Regardless it did a number on my K-member and alignment so I am trying to get the shop to fix it for me on the cheap. Is there any way to claim insurance on that?

Yeah man I am going to see what I can do. I need to see how things go with my suspension and MS2 before I am commented to anything. I just really want my car to be 100% again so I can enjoy it for a while.

I hear you there, that is what I am working on with my car right now. I actually drove it for the first time in a long while a week or so ago when we had a random nice day. Just getting all the kinks worked out now.

Good luck and, as always, keep us posted.

Cars back! Proof of so....

Image

Anyway, there are still some problems of course... The biggest one is MS is having a hissy fit. Car will idle fine, I adjust my VE table alittle to add some fuel and it starts to fluctuate and eventually shut off. Set the TB to have a high idle, it hangs and holds around 1500, set it down alittle bit it fluctuates alot, set it to low it stalls. Uhg

Other problems is my shifter now is really stiff and hard to get in reverse. I guess because my linkages are binding, how do I fix that?

3 inch catless down pipe, 2.5 inch trubendz exhaust with no resonator. Basically just a magnaflow muffler and the turbo keeping things quiet.

I never took pictures of where I relocated MS so here its new home.

Also, small project of replacing my old electric oil psi gauge because the sender crapped on me. Its not worth it to me for the sender to be that inaccurate when I have so much money invested in my motor, so mechanical it is! Also nice to get rid of all the half sweep gauges for full sweep.

Image

And engine as it sits now, nothing really new besides the block, really need to clean things up because the mechanic left things a mess :beatstick:

Here are embarrassing 5 psi pulls that i took on my camera phone (read: bad quality). Car was running pig rich because I was still tuning and I was only at 5 psi. I am only posting these as a base line for whats to come haha, car has never been so slow :(

This one is just cruising and part throttle boost

Image

This one is 2nd to 3rd, don't mind the shifting it is still binding up really badly and trying to shift with the phone in my hand made it even slower

no worries, when you get it all tuned it will be nasty! so it is running good, right? (other than being slow until you turn the boost up)

so, yea...get it tuned and register for Carlisle!

Yeah its running alright at the moment, I still have a bunch of problems to deal with though. Biggest one being my optima red top keeps dieing on me, second one is my idle not wanting to cooperate when I need it to and stalling (adding to the battery problem).

Anyway new video, quality is just as bad if not worse than before (sorry I do not have access to a better camera at this time). Alittle bit better from before, im spiking 10 psi, holding 7-8 at redline. I just want to try to show these videos to give people an idea of the tunning process, its not night and day!

Image

Also, I don't know why the volume on these videos are so low, I will try to correct that for future videos.

ya know, my red top did the same thing to me. they definitely aren't the 'end all, be all' they're made out to be...especially with as much as the damn things cost. i can't be too mad, though, because my uncle works for the company that owns Optima and i only paid $30 for it (brand new).

you are better off with a cheapo...problem is finding a sealed one since you and i both have them in the trunk. do you know any good alternatives?

Nope, I do not. I got my optima working better now, just needed to use it regularly. I also got my warm starts worked out now to so the car doesn't take forever to crank to start.

~ Some updates ~

I turned off idle control, I have a huge vacuum leak from my missing link that I am going to take out and just plug the hole for my map sensor entirely. I know the vacuum leak is effecting my idle control so I need to fix that. Also this will let me raise my boost up, because I know thats where most of my boost leak was coming from, I was loosing a lot of vacuum from that hole.

Car is back at the shop. I had an incident where the car over heated and got up to 290 degrees  For whatever reason, I turned on my heater and I guess that caused a air lock in the system and boiled over all the coolant in the front of the radiator. I added more coolant and it seems to be fine now, but I took it back to them to fix it and to fix my shifter. I don't know what damage that caused yet, I guess time will tell. I hate cars.

Cars. It's all Love/Hate
