Motor building

Post by esteinmaier » Mon Feb 04, 2008 11:50 am

Some pictures were taken while I was finishing up putting the top end of the motor together. Next session is for all the accessories and belts, but the stuff that counts is now together. Forged motor FTW!

Nice. I had to laugh thou cause in the last picture is looks like you have the upper engine stand bolt going through a sensor. Everyone knows that is the best place to bolt it

Keep us posted man!
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

Looks like Thursday is the day I'm gonna put it all together and ready to drop in. I was so tempted to write N E O N on the pistons with a sharpie and take a picture before putting the head on, but oh well. Guess it will have to wait until next time I build a neon motor.

Sweet, I thought eagle rods get bendy at high hp, do you still have those big goals or is that why you are implying that this isn't the only rebuild?

I haven't ever heard of a failure that's not related to nitrous, bad tuning, or bad engine assembly. I don't plan on ever experiencing any of those.
Eagle rates them to 900. I doubt I'll ever see that much. Probably just a hair over 700.

I know.... I should just go ahead and shoot for 4 figures, right? Nah. It's amazing how expensive parts are that can hang at that level.
You get too crazy, and then you have to machine your own block, and a solid block like that can't dissipate heat like one full of coolant passages, so it's only good for 1/4 mile at a time, and then you're stuck with methanol only, as any other fuel would detonate, which then creates all kinds of other fuel system engineering concerns, and then you have to figure out how to keep cylinder pressures that are that high from blowing the head gasket out, and having a turbo big enough to make that kind of power doesn't spool until near stock redline, so you have to rev it thousands higher to be able to use the power to create enough exhaust volume to spin it up, which means all the difficulties of building a head that won't blow itself up over 10k RPM. Then there's drivetrain. Nothing stock will hold together WOT shifting at 1400ft/lb. OK, /rant. 700 is enough for a car that can't put the traction down on the street anyway.

EXACTLY.

After a point, too much horsepower (whether it be 500, 700, 1100, or 1500, etc.) becomes USELESS anyway (assuming that the engine is strong enough, and that you don't break any DRIVETRAIN parts.)

Nah, I don't really care. It just changes so often I don't want to keep it updated. Here's a small one for now:

16g
log manifold
3" DP
Cat removed
No muffler
2.25" boost piping
Mag cam
wiseco pistons
eagle rods
MS
1680cc injectors
earlier fuel rail
aeromotive 1:1 regulator
walbro 255lph pump
autometer oil pressure, fuel pressure, boost pressure, and tach
AEM tru-boost and UEGO
maddog 72% STS
Lots of weight removed
KYB struts
Eibach pro-kit springs
Poly bushings
SRT sways
AGP dog bones
Vitor's trans mount insert
booger bushings
1gn 3.55 trans (for now until I blow this one up too)
OBX LSD
spec stage 3 (again, for now)
hawk pads
kumho v710 tires

I'm sure I'm forgetting some stuff, but that should give you an idea.
