Quick question

Post by Themaggots » Mon Feb 04, 2008 5:19 pm

So I've read about the push-button cig starter and I thought that it was a good idea. But since I don't really want to lose the cig lighter, I've thought about adding a hidden switch so when the switch is at "Off" position, if you try to start the car with the key, there's no power going to the ignition. While the switch is "On", the car would just start normally when using the key. Is that possible?

If it is, would using a switch that can handle 30-40 amps be enough or would I need a relay?

Method of doing it would be to cut the ignition wire and simply hook up the relay/switch and ground it all correctly?

Hmmm, yes, sorta, maybe. I don't know what kind of Neon (it is a Neon, right?) you have, so here goes something.

If your car doesn't have a SKIM system in it, you can install a kill switch to do just that...people have done it for years. A high rated switch is one option, but running a relay would be better. You don't want to run that much amperage to a switch if you don't have to. And yes, it would be a wire in the start circuit. However, if you were to kill the power to the start signal from the ignition switch, that would be a lower amp circuit.

If you have a SKIM system in your car...don't worry about it. It is already there (kinda).

Sounds like you are on the right track...fellow 2GN'ers, other thoughts?
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

It is a Neon. 2000 Chrysler Neon LX.

And I do have a SKIM. What I'm talking about is when the switch is "Off" you can't start the car, even with the sentry key. It's just a simple precaution in-case my keys get stolen or something.
