Looks like the Viper is getting the axe

Post by Diablo0 » Fri Feb 08, 2008 3:43 pm

There have been some speculation for a few months now but I guess it's shaping up to maybe be true...

Not for a few more years though...

Sad to see it go. :(
The obvious argument for killing the halo car is that money spent on developing the next-generation Viper could go towards better interiors and more appealing designs for bread and butter models

It is/was a great platform. I hate to say it, but good riddance. 20 years is a very long run for a car... especially with Chyrsler :P

If 2 or 3 affordable performance cars can come out of this, awsome!

Well that sucks...it is true that it is about time to call it a day. The only problem is that the corvette wont have much competition by US auto makers. Mustang can't hang.

if they were planning on getting rid of the viper they shouldn't have made the acr. if they're trying to save money selling a viper that cost 100000 doesn't make too much sense
the acr is by far the best viper yet imo
Ford does have the GT
that's true but the GT cost so much that it's really not in the same ball park os the vette

The Viper and Corvette would/will get the axe anyway, if EPA has their way with fuel economy reqirements. They just can't make the power and meet fuel economy reqirements. Expect alot of nuetered cars in the future....

I wouldn't say the Vette will get the axe. The LS series of engines are very efficient for being V-8 push rod engines. The 6.2L LS3 puts out 430hp and gets 25 or 26mpg depending on the transmission. The 7.0L LS7 puts out 505hp and gets 24mpg.

06 was the last year for the GT.

The only thing Ford has left that could compete with the vette these days would be the Mustang GT500 or GT500KR.

I won't be surprised when the next news I hear is that a foreign buyer has bought the company. Hint: Nissan.

Just rumors though.

Good thing they spent all thier R&D money on this beauty first, I'm picking mine up tommorrow!

Don't get me wrong, I like supercars, but I'm an average Joe who will never be able to buy one unless I win the lottery. I would love to see better interiors, safety designs, and less fuel dependant designs implemented into new everyday cars.

I also want that flying car I was promised as a kid we all were supposed to be flying around in by the year 2000. George Jetson you bastard! Also, shouldn't we be starting development of a warp core by now?!

What a beautiful car and I'll never have the chance to own one. I hadn't thought much about them until I got to drive one at the SRT Track Experience. Only allowed to get it to second gear during the test drive but I likey.

Fleet average. Or just pay the fines, I believe that's what BMW does in Europe.

Yeah, they will just pass the gas guzzler tax onto the customer. there are a few german cars that have that tax when they get brought over here.

There would be so many pissed off people if the vette got can'd.

GM seems to be actively trying to improve all their fleet vehicles fuel efficiency and trying to expand more into flex fuels. In regard to the Corvette itself; 16/26 for the 08 vette with 430 HP really isnt too bad. I’m sure it will improve over the years as more technology becomes availbile. GM seems to be heading in the right track as a whole.

Dodge on the other hand.. I’m not exactly sure what this company is trying to achieve anymore.

Gas guzzler tax is already handed down to the customer. The tax on the 08 viper is somewhere around $7500.

Though I hate to see it go, it deserves to move into legend status. They sure arent getting any nicer IMO (faster maybe, but I prefer the older ones).

They are making deals with cherry so they can make cheap Chinese cars over here and stamp dodge on them. They are making all the preparations to pay the fines they will get in the future. They won't ever drastically change their vehicles to get less hp and more MPG hell look at what they did to there only non gas guzzler the NEON. Chrysler is gonna pay big time if they don't start bringing back fuel efficient cars.
