Odd shaking

Post by w0158981 » Thu Feb 14, 2008 12:34 pm

started my car this morning and the engine started to shake, i shut down the car turned it on again and kept shaking, i put it in reverse and backed out of the driveway and it stopped shaking, i drove it to school (half hour drive) when i got to school i stopped it and started it and there was no shaking, could it be due to the cold? like it was warmed up when i got to school but in my driveway she was cold i don't know what it was but she was shaking like a mother f*cker

Cold start and maybe the revs were just up real high. My cars shake bad when they are cold cause they idle high.

If you had your defroster on the A/C compressor runs, and if the rear defrost was on it could have had enough load, combined with cold oil, to make the engine struggle to run.

I would say because it was cold. My car shook for a few seconds this morning, but it was cold.

Ya my car is like a Diesel in the winter when i turn it on in the morning(every Neon I have seen is the same), just take it easy on it till its warmed up and you'll be good.

That's exactly what mine did about 2 weeks before the cam sensor started dying. I would suspect it was just the cold though.

Like someone said before if you had the A/C on for the defogger that could have made the rpm's go real low and made it shake. Then once you put the revs up a bit it recovered.

It sounds like a MISFIRE condition to me.

Some possible culprits may be:

- Dirty or worn spark plugs
(best to change or clean them every 10,000 miles)

- Spark plug wire(s)
(Best to change those every 50,000 mi. if they are O.E.M.type.)

- Sticking valve(s)
(You may need to downgrade to lighter weight oil for winter or go with Full Synthetic.)

True, if you have a misfire condition, turning on your A/C compressor (or defroster) will make it seem worse.

ok reading that i definatly need both new spark plugs and wires, so now comes the questions, spark plugs seem kind of universal and i'm not sure if by getting different wires or plugs if there is any benefits? compared to the next set so is there?

Yes and No.
Generally speaking, Neon engines like the 'cheap' Champions spark plugs (or the equivalent NGK's)
Expensive 'platinum' plugs are NOT necessary and can actually run worse than the 'cheap' Champions.

O.E.M.-type replacement spark plug wires are decent.... there are aftermarket choises (MSD, Magnecore) that are better, but more expensive (generally, around $50.)
I have found that the MSD's and Magnecores are better than the Mopar Performance spark plug wires.

Now might be a good time for an 'excuse' to upgrade to the better plug wires, the MSD's and Magnecores will last MUCH longer, if you plan on keeping the car.

Yes as long as you get vehicle specific wires. If you bought a universal set you would get a kit that you will have to cut t length and it cost more. (due to having all the various styles of connectors and extra wire material.) Taylor also makes quality wires as well as Accel. shop around do a search on the net.
Edit: If the original shaking was from the cold/load on the engine stuff afore mentioned the new plugs and wires may not help that 100% - it is normal.
