Questions about regular maintenance.

Post by deep1ca » Sun Mar 02, 2008 3:47 am

Hey guys..

How much power steering fluid will I need to do a power steering flush? Any specific type of power steering fluid?

How much engine oil will I need to do a engine oil flush?

I just bought this car in august 07 and I have no idea how it was maintained in the past, how do you tell its time to replace the pvc valve? Should I take it out and check if its dirty or covered in sludge? Leave it alone if clean?

Should I check to see what condition the spark plugs are in or just go ahead and replace them?

P.S. I have driven this car 7500km since august, in august, engine oil was changed, air filter, and oil filter.

im not too sure how much power steering fluid youll need but i would have like ... 3 bottles i guess(1 litre) as for the engine oil flush. you add flush chemical to it right before you dump the oil. run for the length of time the bottle says, then do a regular oil change (filter and oil) . The engine flush will clean out any sludge in it and if you have any lifter noise it shouldnt quieten them down a bit.

I was in the same spot when I purchased my Neon in June 2007. The only maintenance items I was sure about was the oil change and coolant flush/change... the rest .

I spent the rest of the summer going through the car doing the maintenance and replacing items. It might have been for nothing but at least after doing it I knew exactly what state the maintenance was.

I finished up the summer with the granddaddy of Neon maintenance items... the timing belt.

If your seriously interested in cleaning up the engine and other systems I have a contact that can sell you the best chemicals on the market that I have used personally and swear by them! There from a manufacturer called Siegel and the product is from BG industries. I have used everything from that company and swear by them!
If your interested PM me :)

another engine flush product is Auto-RX.

if it were me, i would just replace the plugs and wires. replace the pcv. if its an auto, replace the trans fluid.

we bought a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee last October. Within the first few weeks I...

- changed the oil/filter
- changed the trans fluid
- changed the front and rear diff fluids
- changed the transfer case fluid

i still have to change the plugs, i was going to do it one time, but the cam sensor on my car took longer than planned and i didn't get around to it before winter set in. i will be changing the coolant and hoses and serp belt this summer.

i have no idea what was done to this car, i just did it.

Is it worth spending the extra money for brand name spark plugs or are something like champions fine? Pros/cons?

Which engine flush system do you recommend?

I went with a mopar oil filter when I did my oil change yesterday, $5. I'd suggest a k&n air filter.

man these forums seem dead these days...

back to the engine flush...

I've heard of two methods..

#1 Add a engine flush additive such as putting a bottle of Gunk motor flush or Pennzoil engine flush system, idle for 5 mins, and then do a regular oil and filter change.

#2 Dump the current oil, refill with thin oil such as 0W20 or 0W40, idle for 15 minutes, and then do a regular oil and filter change

any recommendations? anyone try this?

Why do you want an engine flush?

1. 0w40 is not thin.

2. Go to www.auto-rx.com and buy a can and follow the direction to the letter.

3. Oil filters: I like Purolators. The premium plus filters well and flows well. The pure one sacrifices a little flow for awesome filtering ability. I use a Pure One on my neon. The fat Mopar filter (MO-090) appears to be a Purolator filter, save a few bucks and buy the Purolator. I have yet to take the standard size filter apart, it does not appear to be the same brand, but I could be wrong. I don't know about the SRT sized filter.

4. Spark Plugs: What do you consider name brand if Champions aren't name brand? I use NGK plugs, as do many others. I had a little issue with Champs, then I switched to NGK. Similar price and never had an issue. Currently I have NGK Iridiums right now. As long as you stick with copper or iridium plugs you will be fine.
