what do you other Mac/Apple users have?

Post by hul kogan » Wed Mar 12, 2008 1:10 pm

a recent thread about iTunes sparked my interest in finding out what all the other Mac/Apple users are working with. so, post up what you have...discuss!

My Mac/Apple camp includes:
- MacBook Pro (15", 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB 667 MHz RAM)
- PowerBook 'AlBook' G4 (17", 1 GHz PPC, 1GB RAM)
- Mac Cinema Display (23")
- 4th gen iPod (40GB)

I've got a 400mHz PPC G4 15" Powerbook Ti

and about 1.5 other of the same Powerbooks for spare parts

Other than the powerbook, my main computer is an MDG windows desktop. Would be nice if I can run the CAD/CAE programs on a Mac, but sadly I can't.

1 year old 17" iMac (Intel 2.0 GHz, 1GB, 160HD, SuperDrive, Bluetooth Mighty Mouse and keyboard, etc.) 500GB external firewire drive, 2 1st gen iPod Nanos. 1 GB white (hers) & 4 GB black (his).

At work I use a 5 or so year old PowerMac G5 with similar specs but a 19" widescreen. It's a trooper with no major problems so far. And it gets used hard pretty much every day for 12-14 hours

How're those for just surfing and stuff?

I'm considering a very small 12" or so Mac for my work. All I do is surf and listen to music so I obviously don't need much hardware wise aside from a wifi card. :D

I have a 30GB iPod video and a 1gn Shuffle. I would like to get a Mac desktop, but they are pretty expensive and I can't afford one right now. I do like the ability to run both OS X and XP on the Mac.

My mom on the other hand has a G5 desktop with a 23" screen, a 17" G4 Powerbook laptop and then at work a fairly new G5 desktop with the dual OS capability.

I did win an iphone so I use that. I've been through 5 of them since they came out...they break a lot.

I'm not a mac fan at all. PC is the way to go for my needs.

with any PowerBook G4 you will have plenty of CPU for surfing the web, listening to music, etc.

if you are looking to buy new then the smallest you will be able to get would be a 13" from either the MacBook or MacBook Air lineup. since you won't be doing anything that would command a whole lot hardware wise, you would be fine with the lowest level on any of those.

buying used is always an option. i know Apple offers a number of current and older models in refurbished condition. some aren't that much cheaper but you can definitely find great deals, too. there are also quite a few sites that sell used Apple hardware. eBay is also an option if you are comfortable buying from there.

well dont think this counts but a long time ago i was a server admin, I left just after the initial MacOSX debacle ( mac classic emulation issues). There were quite a few macs in the place. Tons of imacs.

The owner and his partner were die hard mac fans and used to go to all of the mac conventions. We were actually one of the first to have the titanium G4 mac with the largest cinema display they had to offer. These of course were purchased through simon and shuster, one of the largest book publishers in the world as they were the cheif editors. They gave them a discount on this mac and it only cost them nearly 10k for two of matching units with displays. A milestone back then.

Of course not many people would admit it during that time but Mac OSX sucked. Besides breaking computability to a very large degree with mac classic, it was also much slower and software was non existent. Something that affected thousands of people and yet was supressed by the apple fanboy media.

What i always found funny with macs was the apparent need of virtual PC and a licensed copy of windows to get obscure things done. Even though you may not need it often, you still needed to fork over hundreds of dollars just to get another task done. Let's not forget that there is practically no freeware for mac. The little freeware that is out there actually comes from the open source, mostly linux community.

$2,000 workstation mac + $200 virtual PC + $200 windows XP = 2,400 dollars

$0 the hell with mac + $600 workstation PC = $1,800 to spend on two more units for your business.

Even linux users have it better than mac owners. There is zero cost associated with software unless you use enterprise customer support for your distribution. Even though i have admittedly used linux and have been forced to fall back on my windows install, their software is almost all free. I can only think of nerolinux and that stupid version of wine to play games that are fully commercial software for linux. The downside to linux is the horrible hardware support. That is changing more and more though.

I want a iPod Touch so badly. Once the new software ones come into the Apple site's refurb section, I'll get one.

i admit the MacBook Air isn't too practical. but, damn that thing is cool! haha. not worth that kind of money, though.

p.s. the majority always looks at the minority as wackjobs...it is the way of the world.
