i knew it wasn't compressed lol....actually it was compressed the first time....and it pop hard...but my face wasn't in front.

Thats how I usually pull my top hats off and works great. Put it between my knees and stick the air impact gun on it, takes it right off. Never really had the problem you had though

Air tools FTW, also a good pair of vise grips or a pipe wrench with good teeth clamped on the upper portion of that shaft to hold it would have helped also...
