Shifter hanging up?

Questions about axles, transmissions, differentials, pretty much anything that connects the engine to the wheels, this is the place for those questions.

Shifter hanging up?

Post by Kevin_GP » Sat Mar 29, 2008 8:02 pm

Car got a new engine, I did not install it. When I got it back my shifter is alot harder to get in and out of gear, next to impossible to get into reverse. Since nothing changed in the center console, is there an adjustment on the tranny or something that I am missing?

When I am shifting it will pop out of gear almost, but stick really bad trying to get it into the next gear, from 1-2, 2-3. and 4-5 shifts particularly.

My guess is that they didn't support the tranny properly when the engine was installed an f*cked up the cables. I would get an expert confirmation from another source and make the place you originally had it done fix it. Either that or they screwed the clutch/input shaft. (could have removed the bellhousing bolts, then said oh, shit we forgot the flex plate bolts!)

take the shifter cables off the tranny and move the arms on the tranny with your hands...they should move freely...if they do, get back in the car and move the shifter around and see if it moves freely....there should be next to no resistance in moving the shifter when the cables are off the tranny.

if the arms on teh tranny are tough to move, then you can try changing the fluid out...if still it is tough then you probly have something going wrong on the inside, so, you'll need to crack that bad boy open

NOTE: all this is done with the car off, I'm sure you realized that.
good luck

I know with my new trani 3rd and 4th were hard to grab, I popped the hood open to see my catch can sitting on the cables preventing them from moving properly. Also note, how much clutch pedal travel do you have from engaging and disengaging the clutch? There is a pedal adjustment to adjust that.
