quick question

im thinkin of paintin my srt rims. is it necessary to sand down if i do da spray can method

you need to sand ANYTHING you paint. regardless of how you are painting it

when i painted my rims, i used 320 dry to knock the paint down, then 1000 wet, then 2000 wet. i also used a dremel with a grinding wheel to even out the lips where i curbed them.

and then i used acetone to clean it all off and then tack ragged it. then primed, 1000 wet, 2000 wet, tack rag, then paint.

then 2000 wet, then 3000 wet, tack rag, clear (if you're using it). then buff it out

Here's a peak at mines...
Lil dirty...

Mines were already painted but look like crap... so I grabbed some 150 grit and knocked off all the old rattle crap, sand it with 320, primed them, hit them with 320 again, and than sprayed with semi gloss black.... Came out perfect... got lil bored so I bought some motorcycle wheel stripes and added them to the srt's and now they're even better...
