Team DOA - 98 Neon SRT Drag Car -New Track Time 11.7@117mph!

Well...

My Brother (silversport) and I, along with a few friends have started a little enthusiast's group to build a car (or cars...)

We all (with the exception of one) drive Neons.

The car we are starting with is a '98 Expresso Coupe. It was originally a DOHC, 5 Speed.

Pics of it in the garage it was sitting in for ages.

*Thanks to Grant for giving us on awesome deal on this ride man, don't you worry. The project you started, will be taken good care off.*

On the trailer headed home...

All clean...As much as possible in the pitch black outside, but she looks better...

Thats all for now. next step is stripping it.

***Update Time!***

Brakes.

For the rear we jus used all new parts. Drums, Shoes, Cylinders, Hdwe and cleaned everything up nice with a luttle lube. :P

For the front we went with drilled and slotted and vented rotors, with a ceramic pad and rebuild calipers.

I've ordered some SS Russell brake lines from Jegs, just waiting on those.

We've got our boost lines, intercooler, and some more misc. small parts ready. Also received an SRT wiring harness that we're going to use for our MS controlling.

New pics for y'all.

Major Updates!!!

1st off, we picked up an engine from a friend in NH. Its a nice low mileage SRT motor with a 3.55 Trans equipped with a Quaife already.

Image

Then we ordered a fuel cell and SS brake lines from Jeg's. No pics of the brake lines, but you know what they look like! The fuel cell is a 5 gallon Poly tank with foam inside for drag racing.

Taping out the trunk to figure out where the cell will go:
Image

Here is Jeff doing some cutting, WITHOUT the safety guard on, he sure is a rebel LoL
Image

Look out Andrew!!! Jeff is crazy with that grinder!
Image

Fuel cell is in place, just gotta find some straps to hold her in!
Image

Ordered some parts to refresh the motor. Got some Unorthodox adjustable cam gears, new timing belt, new water pump and a new serp belt. We are only running an alternator so we had to find a custom length belt.

Image
Image

Old water pump with plastic vanes!!
Image

Nice new pump, with metal vanes, interesting difference.
Image

We borrowed an engine crane from Jeff's uncle so it was time to get the motor into the car!

We got all of our mounts sorted. Running a custom solid bobble, billet trans mount insert, custom built GreenBastard front mount as well as a solid billet pass side mount.

Needless to say, with little, well actually no play in the mounts getting everything buttoned up was not easy...

Andrew cleaning the engine bay up:

Motor on the crane:

Dad holding onto the crane while I cranked:
Image

Starting to slide it in:
Image

Finally
Image

All the panels out front of the house:
Image

We got the body panels sitting onto it for giggles. JDM hood tilt for now...
Image

Thats all for now, next we will make sure everything is kosher in there and start to wire everything up, guess we should order the MS...

8)

Thanks for looking guys.

Thanks for all the comments guys!

We did some more work today, no pics though. We re-timed the motor, made sure to set the crank arrow properly, and made sure the cams were set correctly.

Also got all the mounts, well, mounted properly. Next is plumbing and accessories!

Chris,

I saw this pic and it worries me...

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y20/Al ... G_4150.jpg

The timing marks on the cams dont line up at all.....are you sure you have it propperly timed? by the looks of the marks on the sprockets, you're about 2 teeth off!

just lookin out for ya man, i dont wanna see that beast die on first startup, ya know?

Thanks for the heads up Matt.

We just slapped them on in that pic. Once I got some time, we went ahead and pulled the VC off, checked the holes in the cams were upright and aligned the marks on the crank and oil pump.

The lines are dead on right now, with the oil pump and crank lined up dead on.

No new updates really, I put some heat shielding on the firewall and coolant overflow, and a few small things, look for a larger update next week sometime :D

Measy, Do it, once you get all the parts, its really not that bad. Its a bolt on really  a big one, but a bolt in nonetheless.

cebosk8, More updates this weekend hopefully.

c987long, got the rotors from local parts store, Partsource, its similar to an Autozone style store.

MyNeonSaysHi, its definitely gonna be alot of fun, the car will be titled and insured under my name since I have the best driving record and cheapest insurance, but we will all race and work on it.

this thread needs to hit page 2. It takes forever to load on the phone, and kicks me out of safari.

The car looks like it's coming along nicely. Is this going to be at Carlisle if its finished in time?

Victoria Day Updates:

Since today is a holiday in the Great White North, we got a little more done today. Took the time to clean up some stuff and get it rolling for now.

Got a set of headlights mounted, the side markers and bumper on, as well as some hubcaps for the sleeper look
Image
Image

Intercooler is all mounted, trimmed back the bumper to get it to fit better, and get a little more air to it.
Image

Cleaned up the underside of the hood and the bay.
Image
Image

Continued gutting the interior and vaccuumed it all out, need to find a seat for it...
Image
Image

And for all the haters, I needed to do this, just to get all the hot air out from the turbo without melting my cowl.
Image

Still want to do some fixes to the body, there is a fair share of dings for an 11 year old car, so there is some paint touch up to do as well as a few nicks to fix, but she's coming along.

Our MS is almost ready, just waiting on a few things first then we will work on getting that in.

 :D

Chris, I completely forgot to send out your adapter. I'll aim to hit the post office on my way home tomorrow. I know you said it isn't a big thing if it waits a few days, but sorry about the delay.
