Tap thread size?

Post by 2001Neon_LX » Fri Apr 11, 2008 4:05 pm

Im in the process of putting a srt rear bar on my '01 and of course the holes for the u-bracket on the driver side have either had the the threads rotted right out or they weren't tapped at the factory. I have all the bolts and brackets and shit but what tap size will I need to use on those holes?

whatever size you can get to work.

you may have to buy some new bolts at the hardware store but you can use any size you want, as long as you can also shave enough out of the bracket holes to fit and still hold the bracket

when i did my rear bar i wasnt even changing the size or anything just replacing a broken bar and 3 of the 4 bolts in the rear snapped so they had to be drilled out and retapped..... in one of the holes the actual tap broke also.. so that had to be drilled out.. when all was said and done there wasnt really enough metal left in the frame to hold a bolt so i ended up having the braket welded on.... so good luck and be careful!

In case they are threaded from the factory, just take the bolt with you to the hardware store, and match it to the tap. Most likely metric. Once you get them tapped (use cutting oil) use plenty of anti-seize on them so you can get them back out someday.

Hey dood, I just did this to my 04 SXT like a week ago, literally...

I went to Advance Auto, bought a tap and die kit, bought the size bolts i felt like using and tapped the bitches out the same size and the clamps mounted perfectly

If u want me to go check what size i tapped to, just let me know.

I am sure if you PM'd Danteneon and asked him nicely, he would gladly tell you the bolt size and thread pitch so that you don't hack the threads and have your bar pull out too easily after some aggressive driving.
