03-05 PT Cruiser 3.94 MTX in my SXT?

Questions about axles, transmissions, differentials, pretty much anything that connects the engine to the wheels, this is the place for those questions.

03-05 PT Cruiser 3.94 MTX in my SXT?

Post by severeundersteer3000 » Fri Apr 18, 2008 6:45 pm

I am looking to replace my 3.55 trans with the 3.94 trans w/ the .72 fifth.

I searched and discovered the 03-05 rt neon used 3.94 w/ .72 5th

Also I discovered that the 03-05 PT Cruiser used the 3.94 w/ .72 5th

Does the PT cruiser trans bolt right on w/ zero modification.
Do I have to swap bell housings?
do i need a new Speedo sensor?

I assume the PT trans will be easier to find.

Also I plan on using the PT Cruiser Clutch.

Any knowledge will help Thanks

PT trans will work fine

The PT trans should work fine. Don't know if they are necessarily easier to find though, not a lot of PT's are built with a manual trans.

As far as the 03/04 R/T's go, there is some documentation that shows that the R/T's were supposed to get the .72 5th like the regular Neons and the PT's did from 03 on, however there was a thread on this subject on the .org and at least one 03+ R/T owner supposedly checked and theirs still had the .81 5th. Knowing Chrysler it's entirely possible that if the R/T's went to the .72 5th, it was a running change, or some early built 03's may have still gone out with leftover .81 5th gears.

I have a PT trans sitting in the garage, and before I purchased it I actually got in touch with someone at NVG who confirmed based on the trans's part # the final and 5th for me.
