17x8, what size tire?

Post by nineball » Tue Apr 22, 2008 5:08 pm

anyone running 17x8 wheels, and if so, what is your offset and what size tire are you running? would prefer to hear from someone with a non-srt, un-modified (coils, lowering, etc).

i have a possible great deal on a set of them but have to price out tires to see what the end result will be.

thanks

215/40/17 is a dead on match for the same tire height as stock. don't know what exactly the offset should be.

there isn't really a point in getting 17x8s since running 225 series tires (basically the point of getting the 8in width) hits your struts. I believe the 215/40/17 should still fit but the basic point of getting the 8in rim is to run 225s.

you might have clearence issues without moving to srt struts. Unless you have a large ofset and use 215 series tires mostlikely will have trouble.

Someone else without coilovers should chime in to comfirm.

I have stock struts and i'm gonna be attempting to mount a set of wheels that are 17x8 with 35mm offset with 205/40/17 tires sometime this week.

I'll let you know how it goes.

I've never understood how having coils which LOWER the car help the tires to not rub on the SIDES. Can someone explain that please? Because I have coils, and am planning to get 225mm tires when I get my new wheels next month.

With an 8" wheel, the smallest width I'd run would be 225. 215's may fit but I think you'll be stretching the sideways to meet up with the wheel. 17x8 with 35mm should fit fine, you're problem will lie in the tire size since the clearance between the tire and strut will be very close depending on how much camber you want to run. If you want to run -1.5-2deg I'd start looking at camber plates.

Those tires are way too narrow for an 8" wheel. :-? I would have went with a 225.

yellowpatrol - Eh, it doesn't really help in running wider tires unless the strut on the coilover is smaller compared to stock. However with the stock strut design, if you want a really wide tire as the tire moves in closer to the stock strut the stock spring perch also angles downward where it attaches to the strut, thus making it a very close fit and possibly rubbing. It mostly helps in running taller tires since there isn't a huge spring perch and is instead replaced with a tiny ring that doesn't protude very much.

So probably the best way to run a wider tire is spacers?

Yah, or get a higher negative offset. Then however, you're getting to the point where the wheel will extend past the fender. If your suspension isn't all that stiff, when you go over a bump or around a bend there's that chance your wheel could come up and rub against your fender. Then you'd have to get it rolled but if the wheel is too far out even that won't fix it.

They will be stretched but it isn't really a problem. I'd prefer 215 but the wheels came with 205. When the rubber wears out i'll be replacing it with 215s.

VW guys love the stretch look and do it all the time with no problems. The guy I just bought the wheels ran 205/40/17 on them for 3 years no problems. The only thing I don't like is that the wheels are more easily scratched and curb rashed.

I got my wheels on right now, 17x8 35mm offset. 205/40/17 tires. Stock struts lowered on 1.5'' kazerra springs. I have no rubbing.

I'm 99% sure 215/40/17 would fit too, if not 3mm spacers would work.
