What to do?!

Post by vntned » Wed Apr 23, 2008 3:50 pm

Well, Im torn! Money is kinda tight because Im getting married next month and Im ending up paying for alot of it. My Fiance' and I have been trying to figure out how to lower our monthly expenses. Unfortunately shes way to upside down on her '04 Suzuki to get rid of that payment (fckin $330 a month). The only other payments we have are credit cards and my R/T. I doubt I can sell the credit debt to anybody so we decided to sell the R/T.

I put the R/T up on this forum and a few others and actually found a buyer who is willing to pay what I owe. There will be no profit just getting rid of the $160 a month payment.

This would pretty much leave me without a driveable car until I get my GLH fixed(mid June at the latest). DanteNeon is selling me what I need to get my Omni going. For a killer price!

The GLH should be significantly faster than the R/T. The GLH should be good for high 14s vs the R/Ts high 15s, maybe! The GLH will also handle way better with its MP springs, swaybars, and polybushings!

The problem though is that the GLH is gonna have a pretty beasty carbd setup and probally will be heavy on gas. Im guessing mid teens? My R/T gets high 20s on average. The insurance on just the GLH will be about $60 cheaper than what Im paying now for the neon.

So Ill save $220 off the R/T but spend an extra $100 a month on gas.

What would you do?

Omni GLH?

Or R/T?

Both cars would be sweet to drive. However...

I believe it would be better to have the more reliable car, which is the R/T imo. I am currently looking to get rid of my neon in about a year as to start driving my Monte Carlo SS again, but the reason I am doing so is because I have a company car for daily use. If it wasn't for that fact, I wouldn't be touching the Monte for another couple years.

Big things you need to ask yourself:
1. Can I deal with not having a car for 2 months?
2. What will I do when something breaks on the GLH? (because something will break if it is a beastly engine)

If it were me I would...
1. Keep the R/T, it will be more reliable for a daily driver.
2. If you are not attached to the GLH, maybe sell it, put the cash into savings. I know GLH's are hard to come by, but are you truly using the GLH portion of the car, what I mean is can you get an Omni and do the same thing to it. I completely understand the cool factor of it though.

Oh...it's a carbed GLH? Yeesh. As rare as they are, I would opt to let it go. the R/T is gonna be just as expensive to keep on the road with basic repairs and upkeep (depending on how much you drive) but it will be more reliable. The GLH is a pretty common car for what it is. Prolly not as common in the condition yours is in but being a carbed and non-turbo car, it will be fun and cheap to drive but it can be hit and miss on most days (I owned on the most reliable Shelby Chargers available about 8 years ago..the only things that went bad were cheap, easy to fix and were 15 year old original parts so i could not be too mad). But, if you think you will get more for the R/T and can fix the Omni on the side of the road with ease, then keep it (note to you, buy a couple of the 'computer' modules just in case). It's a tough one but if I were in your position, I would keep the Omni only because I can work on it and know people who can help me if I couldn't.

I betcha if I posted this up on Turbododge.com or Turbo-Mopar.com everybody would say lose the Neon and keep the GLH!

Bottom line is I will never sell this GLH! Ive got way to much history to ever get rid of it. The engine going in it is very stout. Fully forged and balanced built by Mancini Racing, Forward Motion head, and weber 45DCOEs sidedraft carbs. I can pull the head off of one of these 2.2s in less than 30min! I cut my teeth on these enginese and have been inside nearly a dozen of these engines. This will be the 4th engine going in my GLH. It went from stock to stock rebuild to mild mods and now to fully built. Ive got three stock engines at my house that I could have ready to go in over a weekend!

Im leaning towards the GLH! No computers no electric bull crap! Non interference! I can get a trans for it for $50 or cheaper! The Neon is way nicer of course and will be very reliable but if it brakes I wont be able to afford to fix it. If the Omni brakes I can carry it home and fix it with spare parts Ive already got!

Errm...it's Danteneon...

Well, you know what my vote is

Like you said, the Omni is a very easy beast to work with. Mind you, the engine you are buying is a beast...even with the cam that is in it. Hell, until the rings are fully seated (remember, less than 500 miles on it) it will still consume some oil (another added, albeit, smaller expense).

If you can, ride out the tight times as best as possible, drive the R/T, and garage the Omni.

Besides...I need the money too!

J/K. Do what you need to man
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

The pic above of the Omni is when I first got it! They look way better with the '85-'86 GLH airdam and sideskirts on it! Like this...

Ive just been real let down by my 2gn R/T. I guess i got spoiled with my DOHC 1GN! It was running high 14s at 91+mph with just a CAI, MP ecu, Pacesetter header and Dynomax muffler! It would even get 36mpg!

Ive always loved the 2GNs and really wanted an '01-'02 R/T or ACR. I spotted mine on ebay and bid not expecting to really win it. I was psyked when I first got it and had plans to make it a 14sec DD! Then after I got it I found out that the NGC cars are speedproof! I put the MPX UDP and AEM CAI on it and it felt a little peppier. Then I reset the computer and it feels slower than before! I love how the car looks and it handles decent, it should get better than 28-32mpg for being as slow as it is!

Well, I guess Im gonna keep my R/T and my GLH.

The R/T is goin back to its stock 16''s and then maybe a tint job(to keep the sun off my son!).

All other time, and hopefully money if I can save up some, is goin into my GLH!

Glad that I didn't have to make the decision- I love Neons but have a HUGE soft spot in my heart for the good old Omni (many years ago, I had an '84 and an '87, both new). Yours looks super fine!

The GLH believe it or not in stock or mint condition is actually considered show worthy garage kept, where the R/T to most people is just another neon...
I regret getting rid of my old Shelby Charger, and I kick myself everyday for it but atleast its got a good owner that has the $ to take care of it and it runs 12sec 1/4's now....
