This is something new I haven't tried yet

Nothing beats a good engine cleaning. You can do a quicky job, but if you spend the time to do it right once, it's easier to mantain that level of clean down the road.

If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

IIRC there are a few how-to's on engine cleaning, check those threads. I should follow my own advice too, my engine's dirty as hell

A dirty engine can mask where leaks are coming from, and become a pain in the ass when replacing certain parts. It can also cause corrosion problems especially if you live up north where salt mixes with the dirt and grime. Soapy water and a wire brush can do wonders against the dirt and grime, but sometimes you just have to use the toxic nasty degreasers. Just make sure to wear a respirator or mask so none gets in your mouth and you don't breath the fumes.

Don't get me wrong, I don't use a mask or respirtator either. I just thought I would save people some brain cells since most have families and children.
EDIT: Hey you're from dallas too, nice to see we got some local members. I've only found one other guy so far, maybe we can get a meet or a wrench day together.

Actually, it was the dirt trail that lead me to discover the CPS (Cam Position Sensor) was leaking oil.Donkeypuncher wrote:A dirty engine can mask where leaks are coming from
I had my engine bay relatively clean by the end of last summer... clean mind you, not pristine. After putting on about 3000 miles over the winter the engine bay is dirty again.
Since I run a daily driver rather than trailered show car I need to draw the line somewhere otherwise keeping it clean would drive me nuts.
