Towing Capabilities?

Post by GreeNeons03 » Wed Apr 30, 2008 2:55 pm

First off, I want to say that I hate seeing trailer hitches on cars. Whether it's a Neon or a Crown Vic it's just not right and doesn't look right. Save them for the trucks and SUV's. However, this may be the only reason I would ever even think about putting a trailer hitch on my car.

I'm looking into getting a JetSki. Now since I don't have a truck or SUV to put a hitch on, my car would be the only thing I could tow it with. That being said, would I be able to tow a JetSki with my car without tearing up the transmission?

Most likely. I know a lot of people that do it and don't have any problems.

Check your owner's manual. I don't have it on hand, but I know it lists the towing capability. The base models can tow, but towing is not recommended for R/Ts for whatever reason.

1000lb towing limit for autos
2000lb towing limit for manuals
100lb tongue weight limit for both

The OP in that thread asked about 2000's, but there shouldn't be any difference between any of the 2gns.

Jet-ski's weigh about 700+ pounds so that only leaves you about 300 pounds for the trailer... if you have an auto.

Those trailers don't weight much, so I don't think it would be a big deal.

Yeah the trailers are usually made of aluminum aren’t they? So their pretty light weight. I do have an auto ( :cussing: ) and the one I’m looking at weighs around 820 lbs.

Also, what do you mean by "tongue weight"?

tongue weight is the weight that is actually attached to the car. the weight that isn't supported by the trailers tires. i think this picture describes it best:

I can look up the second gen towing specs when I get home if you need it.
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

I went by the "JetSki Store" today to learn a little more about them. I found out that they make the same one that I posted earlier in a 2 seater (me + the lady friend = :D )that has the same engine specs and is lighter, cost less too. I think I'll go with that one.

BTW, thanks Racer for the explanation.
