Bike Rack

Post by DJ CptnCrnch » Thu May 01, 2008 8:46 am

I did a search and didnt really come up with anything.

What kind of bike rack works best for our neons. I want one for my trunk, but i have the srt spoiler.

Ive seen the one that goes on the roof of the car, but im not a big fan.

I know i saw one on a WRX with the big wing, so im sure they make them, but cant find anything. Im looking for a 2 bike carrier, but i could settle on 1. Right now i can fit my bike in the trunk, but i dont feel like taking my sub out everytime i want to ride.

My experience with this is : unless you get one that plugs into the towing hitch (if you have one), you will for SURE dent, scratch, damage your trunk's paint job. not only that, but once you install it, watch out when you close your trunk since it becomes heavy, and will slam-shut really fast.

I have a generic trunk mounted -two bike rack, and it works fine, but as i said, it does scratch my paint on a regular basis.... and it needs tightening every now and then because it tends to move ....and you have a spoiler, so i don't think it will install correctly on your car.. although of some of the top of the line brands like Yakima could....

I use a Cycle Gear Road Shuttle. I haven't had any problems with paint damage, but then again it isn't on all the time. I haven't tried to mount one to a decklid with a SRT spoiler on it, but as versatile as it is, I don't think it would be a problem.

And just for reference, I carry two Cannondales on it.
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

I mounted an adjustable bike rack on the trunk of a 1999 Camry I used to own.

Never any trouble with getting the paint scratched or marked, but I was always very careful with mounting the rack and bikes. It wasn't a 5 minute job to get it done right.

I'll never have another trunk rack if I can avoid it... I always found it a royal pain in the rear.

-Accessing the trunk is very difficult when the bikes are mounted.

-Theft is always a concern and to avoid that worry you need to cable the bikes to the car. Also need to cable the rack to the car if you don't want to worry about someone running off with your rack while you are biking.

-Mounting the rack and bikes was always very time consuming particularly if you don't want scratches on the paint.

-No matter how tight I'd mount everything up there was always a certain amount of movement... over time rolling down the highway this always loosens up and needs adjustment.
