Need opinion

Post by yankeesking » Sun May 04, 2008 8:39 pm

Hi there. Yesterday I replaced spark plugs, rubber gasket, and air fliter on my 2000 Dodge Neon Es. I drive manual stick. So, I did fine and nothing wrong. When I started the engine, the muffler was smoking big time. I gave it few minutes. Finally it reduced but still smoking a little bit. It's not like before I had it clear smoking, not white smoking. I looked at Neon book and it said it would happen if spark plugs are faulty or emission faulty. It can't be spark plugs or emission. I need your opinion what would caused it? Or is it just normal and should I give it few days to get clear smoke?? Thanks.

Your probably just burning all the excess carbon in the cylinders...
But I'm just guessing...
(atleast thats what happens when I change my plugs)

When you changed the plugs were they covered in oil? Like in the tubes and plug wire boots. If they were your plug tubes are leaking oil, and the oil that was in the tubes leaked into the combustion chamber when the plugs were removed. Then when you started it the oil that drained into the engine caused all the smoke. Just a theory....

Yes the spark plugs were covered with oil. That's why I had to replace gasket. I put spark plugs in and made it tightly (Not toooo tight) I guess I should give it few days and see if white smokes stop.

My inspection due is coming, would it effect?

As long as the oil is burned out and it's not smoking anymore it should pass.

Yep, it was the oil that was around the spark plugs... it drained into the cylinder.

Driving it on the highway for a few miles will clear that all out.
