So I was cruising down I-65 at 75 mph, and all the sudden the car studderd, threw a CEL, and died. (When this happened my gauges immediately turned off) So, I glide into a rest stop (Just happened to be literally 100ft from the thing. And I open the hood to see my Coil pack is broke, and spewing black goo. So I call up my granpa, he comes with his trailer and tows me to his house. At his house we find that the car isn't cranking...and we begin to tear the motor apart.

What do you guys think the odds are that my Timing belt came off, and maybe a piston broke loose and got caught up in some valves? I'm still working on getting into the engine far enough, but to me it just seemed like the wires must of had some serious resistance going on..But the old man insists at we look at the timing belt/valves/pistons ect...

The car had plenty of oil.

Input appreciated.

I'd find out what the code it threw first. I doubt that its the timing if the engine won't even crank. I'd also replace the plugs wires and coil pack if it was spitting goo, thats definitely not a good sign. It sounds like the problem is electrical, especially since it won't crank and all of a sudden died.

Unless your coil pack is broken from a piston coming through the head, I would have to agree with aperson. You appear to have been on here long enough to know how to get the Cel codes, so I won't go into that. I would be trying to find out why the coil pack possibly got hot enough to "explode". Maybe the alternator went haywire and started putting out voltage higher than the battery and coil could handle and fried them both. Check the battery, and try to jump it to crank, but try turning the engine by putting a ratchet and socket on the crank bolt first to see if it will turn freely at least 2 or 3 revolutions. Then you will be sure it will not be damaged any worse, if something is wrong internally. On my Cordoba with the huge 100 amp alternator they had in the '70's, I had a fuseable link fail and it jumped the voltage up for some reason. It melted half the wires under my dash, and blew out all the lights that were on at the time, so shit like this does happen.

well I finally got around to checking everything out and putting it all back together, and the battery works, ect. But it's not cranking. I'm not getting a code. I replaced the coilpack and wires, and everything works, headlights, radio, gauges. Just no crank when I turn the key. I'm thinking its either the ignition in the steering column, or the ignition in the engine bay...

input appreciated =/

Is the starter solenoid engaging? Does anything dim like the headlights when you try to crank it? Is the starter making noise?
