New exhaust for the neon (vids posted!)

Post by NiteHawk » Mon May 05, 2008 2:59 am

So I grabbed some part numbers a while back and ordered the DynoMax piping for my car. I ordered the first gen mid pipe and 2 2nd gen rear pipes. I also ordered 2 Morroso spiral flow mufflers from modern.

I've had the parts sitting here for about, oh, 6 months now...just now finally decided to do something with them...

Here's the first gen mid pipe, all marked for cutting.

Image

First section cut and inserted into first muffler.

Image

2nd muffler test fitted onto back half of mid pipe.

Image

Mid pipe almost done.

Image

2 mufflers coupled together and last section of first gen mid pipe cut off to match 2nd gen rear pipe.

Image

Another shot, you can see the coupling between the mufflers better...

Image

This is the basic idea for the rear section i'm going to have made. I've got a couple buddy's looking at this.

Image

This is more like what it would be...not to scale, but better explaination of what i want :)

Image

That's all for now

Not bad, definately not bad....
Reuse the Y from the SRT exhaust pipe and you'll be set :)

Looks good Matt. Like Chris said though, I'd re-use the Y from the SRT.

:withstupid:

Believe it or not, that would be a good way to go. The SRT rear section isn't as restrictive as it may first appear, and it would save you quite a bit of work.

Gratz on doing a nice alternative

Dynomax piping = 2.5"

SRT piping = 2.25"

I'm guessing thats why.

yeah, thats one reason...

and this is going to be really hard to believe, but where the clamp is on the srt rear section...........its only 2".....i know, it cant be, but i measured it

thanks for the comments guys :)

UPDATE!

Mid pipe and rear pipe(not rear section) are on the car.

First, the parts to be installed. SRT cat w/ 30k miles, reusing my O2 sensor, and all the piping we worked on before.

Image
Image

The old exhaust......2 rusted out redhot glasspacks, not even 1yr old yet, flowmaster 80 series, missing tips, old crush bent 2.5" piping...

Side note...THIS is why i HATE Energy Suspension LCA bushings...

Image
Image

Ok, back on topic...

Out with the old.....

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

In with the new.....

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

Time to weld it up... sure they're not perfect, but a lot better than the last exhaust!

Image
Image
Image
Image

All clamped and welded... The cheapo clamps are going to be replaced with band clamps

Image

and YES, it clears the swaybar................by about 1/2"! lol

Image
Image
Image

Total time from start to finish........1.5hours, including a 20 minute break waiting for the welder to not be in use!

All in all, I'de say the sound at idle is very quiet. You cant hear it inside the car at idle. around 3000rpm it gets a little louder, after 4500rpm you cant tell between the intake and exhaust. plans are a flowmaster 50suv muffler and a single tip on the passanger side. I held the srt rear up to the pipe, and somehow, it actually got louder and higher pitched(normally dual gives a deeper tone!)

its not raspy at all, and the sound is ALMOST as deep as the flowmaster 80 series, without all the excessive droning. it does drone a little, but not as bad as before.

I'll post more pics once i get the 50series installed.

for the time being...

its definatly louder this way...but surprisingly, with the windows up, it doesnt seem to drone much when cruising...and idle even with windows down is very quiet inside the car :)

they're steel...... and they're not nearly as bad as they look...

and they're not glasspacks, they're morroso spiral flow mufflers...

they're not aluminized or stainless or even mild steel, they're just regular steel... I'm going to spray them eventually, but they wont rust through

I personally woulda went with the original set-up with the two tips out the back, but I guess it looks alright. I was thinking about going that route in the future, for sake of the "AAR" theme, but now that I see the same tip out the side, I dunno if I'd like it.

this isnt going to stay forever

well, maybe.........we'll see...

the ONLY thing that will make me leave it like this, is if i plate the underside of the car(making the underside of the car streamline and eliminating the parachute effect of the rear bumper)

I'll take a vid clip in a bit here, have to run out to the store for smokes anyways.....

Sounds good to me but not sure about the cop factor though. I have a Hotchkiss rear sway bar and plan on 2.5" pipes too. I don't think clearance will be possible. I might just have to go the side exit route out of necessity.

i'm 100% sure about it.

i got them from a local autoparts store that sells Monroe struts.

that and i'm running 225/45r17 tires

no way in hell you can fit those under a neon strut

Do you remember the part numbers? this is very interesting since one could easily get these instead of a used SRT4 set.....

yes, since you fit the 225, then they are for the SRT4
