Rear brake drums stuck

Post by neonxrt » Mon May 05, 2008 10:00 am

Anyone ever had a problem removing teh rear drums? I've had them off before, about 3 or 4 years ago, but now they won't come off. At first they were hard to turn by hand, but with the wheel put back on I turned them a bit then they loosened up, but I still can't pull either drum off. I'm guessing it may be rusted on? Any thips/shortcuts to get them loose and pulled off would be a great help!
Thanks!

Any tips on where I should try to spray some PB Blaster without damaging the drum or the brake components inside?

If the drums wont come off and the last time you had them off was a few years ago, just use a prybar behind the drum on one side and hit it with a hammer on the other. Or torches. I really like torches. If the drum won't come off then just rip it apart, the most you'll damage is the crap that is already broken/worn. You may end up replacing the wheel cylinder if its leaking and maybe the parking brake cables if the springs/ball end is rusted or falling off. Other than that, you might want to seriously consider drums, shoes and hardware kits.
