What's Best Buy's return policy like in the store?

Post by TeckNeon » Mon May 05, 2008 4:30 pm

Basically, I have this router I just got via a friend. His brother won it at a work contest and I bought it off him for $30. It's factory sealed.

It's in Best Buy's ad for $100. (Netgear Rangemax N or something like that). Well, I spotted that they have the top of the line Sirius radio I would love to have for $180 with the purchase of a $50 Sirius gift card. So what I would like to do is, bring the router in for store credit, buy the Sirius radio deal, use my Rewards Zone dollars and 12% off coupon and nab that sucker for like $75 with taxes and such. When it's all said and done, I will have a $170 Sirius radio for like $50 and 4 months of prepaid service. Sounds like a plan to me!

Their site says I need a receipt but I was gonna pull the "I got this as a gift and I all ready got this model" type of thing. It's a little shady but it's not like I am returning a jar of spaghetti sauce for a camcorder for store credit.

What are my chances of this working out?

Call and ask to speak to the manager. they should be able to let you kno if you can atleast get store credit. IDk how Best Buy works though. Maybe someone here worked there, see if they chime in

It's hardly fraud when it's an item they all ready sell and carry and are advertising in this week's circular. I just didn't get it there.

If it were Walmart, they would do it sight unseen. All they can do is tell me "no returns without a receipt." If it was stolen or whatever, then you would have a case against me but it's not. It came from a Staples employee who won it in a store contest. He lost his job weeks ago, had this sitting around and had his brother sell it here at work for as much as possible. Problem is, Staples doesn't sell satellite radios or this would be a whole lot less complicated.

As Mox's public relations advisor I am at will to say that it truely depends on the store. However, the Policy reflects No Receipt No Return.

A store is at liberty to give store credit, but only in the event that the item was given as a gift, this can be verified by purchase logs that date back as much as 15 years.

The Mox would not allow such an act to be done as he is the Manager on Duty

If the router came from BBY then there isn't really anything to worry about, tell them that you got it for a gift and want to exchange it for what you mentioned in the first post.

I guess you didn't see that they can look up transactions for the past 15 or so years. It can backfire. Its stil fraud.

I worked there too. They can do a "no-reciept-return". They will take down your info off your driver's license, and they will only let you do one per year, but you can certainly do it. Just be nice when you talk to them, acting like a dick gets you nowhere.

Ya as a former Geek Squad agent we worked right next to the Service desk. People would do this all the time... If they have it then more then likely they will exchange it for store credit.

As a Current Loss Prevention Supervisor though, I can tell you they have no bases to call it fraud since there is no proof that it wasn't actually purchased as a Best Buy elsewhere. In order for a situation like this to qualify as refund fraud, you would have to have stolen the router from the store and returned it for credit or purchased the router from a competitor for cheaper and returned it for a profit.

Best Buy will just either put the router back on the shelf for resale or send it back to the manufacturer for a refund of what they paid for it so no ones going to suffer a loss.

Id say give it a try ;)

Best Buy is fine, Geek Squad on the other hand can suck my $%^&. I took my laptop in with a bad hard drive for a data recovery/backup they said they could do it just fine. WEEK later they call and say they got everything off my D: drive... which isnt even the hard drive i told them to recover/backup. He calls me back 5 minutes later and says he cant recover anything from my C: drive. I went and got it and came home and later the week was able to recovery everything off my C: drive using some free software i found on GOOGLE. I went back up there for a refund of their BS, they refused to give it to me and said their software isnt able to recover corrupted file allocation tables (FAT)... (just fyi, Vista uses NTFS not FAT) easily recoverable so... im goin thru my credit card company now to reverse the entire charge.
Their manager is also a dick here at our store. I was about to bitch slap him. /end rant

I don't know how it is now, but when I worked there, there we no tools whatsoever for performing data recovery. The most we had was a bootable pe disc. Also, they are legally only allowed to use the tools they are approved to use by corporate, and it's a pretty big deal since they got busted on the whole thing with Sysinternals.

Good for you though, getting the job done. What program did you have to use?

Well, everyone once thought that red cars were fast. Then all of a sudden people realized that ketchup is red and is slow when coming out of the bottle then but mustard comes right out.

Yellow = fast. period.

Wow at the precinct I work if you brought in just a computer and wanted data backed up then we'd throw it in a bench PC and try it, if we can then we'd charge you and do the work. If not then we'd tell you that we'd have to ship it and give you pricing. Not all Geek Squad Precincts are like that though, Also I've been to a couple precincts where they had less then bright Agents there too.

Mustard is fucking disgusting when it shoots out the crusty thing and then comes out all runny at first. So I'll take ketchup any time.

Stellar Phoenix FAT & NTFS Data Recovery Software

When I went back to bitch at them, they said they have software that does the same thing supposedly, but it doesnt recover FAT systems. Which makes no sense to me since Vista uses NTFS

[Gets on a soap box}

Wow if that isn't the most retarded comment I have ever seen... Not only are VW bugs the least gay thing you could drive, but if you were to meet Most "Not All" but most Geek squad agents, they would 100% pwn your ass with computer knowledge. Your Best Buy obviously took the route that most staples and Circuit City take, they hire them to look pretty and make stupid customers feel better about there purchase.

I was the Full time Counter Intelligence Agent at the Best Buy in Quincy, it was the greatest job I have had to date. If you want to slam a profession, pick somthing else to make fun of, you have no idea what those agents go through on a daily bases...
