cd player/headunit with USB

Post by 1/2 Scottish » Tue May 06, 2008 9:10 pm

Ok, if anyone on here has used the USB function on their particular stereo, please let me know how well it works (or not). For example, i want to hook up a 80gb external harddrive and put ALL my music on it so i dont have to mess with anything. I know it has been done before but they didn't say how much storage space they were allowed to have or anything. I have read that the usb function on many only supports up to 20GB or 30Gb of storage and so on. I also read that only some of the head-units will allow to scroll through the songs by artists or folders, and some didn't and were too clunky/slow. Let me know of your experiences and if good, recommend a head-unit to me.

I'd try an Alpine CDA-9883 and I like it except for the screen, If you have an iPod I'd stick with alpine.

It's not a perfected technology just yet. They can't go through too many folders and such. Your best bet for that many gigs would be an iPod like suggested and set everything up into playlists and access it that way. It would be a cleaner interface and the data would communicate better with the head unit.

i am not an ipod fan either. i have a jvc kd-g820 and the usb works perfectly for me. i have a usb factory input on my other car and have a pair of 8g thumb drives that i use in each. i can have up to 99 folders in each car with up to 99 tracks in each folder. i have a bus powered 120g drive i use for my notebook but never tried it in either car.

Yeah there was a company that was making a unit that had its own hard drive that you could put in the trunk or where ever, you can wirelessly upload your music from your computer to your car. It was kinda expensive though, but i may look for it again. Yeah I am still thinking about at least a zune and I have to, an ipod. So, do you only need one cord to power the ipod and connect? I didn't exactly want a million cables and what not. Nineball, so you can view it by folders? Can you put a folder inside of a folder, and it will see it? And how is the access times? Thx guys

access time is just as fast as a cd. i do go by folder, but as i said before with 99 folders there is no need to stack them inside each other, nor have i tried.
