Squeel in engine bay

Post by LyricsNLines » Thu May 08, 2008 10:04 pm

What would cause a low squeel noise in the engine bay. I've been searching and cant seem to figure out what it is. Its not a drive belt at all. I cant even determine its exact location. Its mostly heard at idle and very low speeds, aside from that I dont hear it.

If we are talking about the same thing, I get that too. No idea what it comes from but I am 99% sure its from the belts area.

I had a similar (if not the same) problem. Time to check your alternator belt. Mine snapped and I got stuck in traffic. :tardbang:

Spray some belt dressing on your belts, if the noise stops then it's probably the belt. If the noise doesn't stop, then it's time to remove the belts one at a time. Start with the ac/ps belt, then move to the alternator if it still squeals. You should be able to narrow it down like that.

I would say any of your belts, or tensioner pulley.

Check the tubing going to your valve cover to air cleaner. (the fresh air inlet for PCV on the rear above the exhaust mani). Mine got blocked once and the vacuum made some strange noises. It would only happen at idle or decel because thats when manifold vacuum is the highest.
And watch out for those angry gerbils, their teeth are sharp!

Either it's a vacuum leak, or possibly the over-run bearing on your A/C clutch is going. The defrost will cycle you A/C compressor, and the bearing doesn't spin while the A/C pump is running. Are you 100% sure the noise is in the engine bay? could it be under the dash, as in a vacuum motor for the air blend door leaking causing the noise. As it would also change state with the defrost actuated. It could also be belt related as the A/C will change the load on the belt. You could try removing the A/C /PS pump belt to see if it goes away.

Exact problem found. It was the PCV Valve! They do cause a very audible squeel...
