Questions about axles, transmissions, differentials, pretty much anything that connects the engine to the wheels, this is the place for those questions.

trans shot? how to replace trans?

Post by loko498 » Tue May 13, 2008 9:26 am

I think my trans is shot. 2000 plymouth neon automatic. Its been slipping like crazy the last few days until yesterday when this happened. I was in park after it slipping real bad, put it in drive and it took forever to catch. I put it in reverse then drive a few times then it barely caught to make it home. I think it needs to be replaced. There was transmission fluid in there and it looked fine to me.
Do you guys think it could be something else, possibly a easy or cheap fix?
Is there a how to change a transmission link someone could send me. I did a quick search but couldn't find anything.

Well if it was something simple, it is prolly done now after all that slipping. Factory FSM:

sounds like what happened to me at carlilse last year, your clutch bands may have died, which is what happened to mine. I advise against attempting to fix this one yourself, let a certified mechanic look it over, unless you plan on just swapping the tranny with another, in which case i'd go for an MTX swap

Hey guys, I brought it to a certified mechanic the other day & he showed me the transpan was wet. I drove it about 4 blocks & it was slipping like crazy.
I showed up in the shop unexpected earlier 2 see whats going on with it & they were working on it & showed me parts on the table. There were pieces of metal & I guess clutch bands & gears & he said it was all shot & being rebuilt.
Car should be dont tomorrow night. Ill let you guys know the damage.
He did say it should be about 800- $1000 unfortunately

shouldve done an MTX swap.. woulda been happier wiht it afterwards, and wouldve cost you about half that with junkyard parts.
