Cometic Head Gasket Help...

Post by GunmetalNeon » Tue May 27, 2008 3:21 am

So after ordering a cometic head gasket I read that they don't work with ngc engines.... Is this true? They should fit, but why don't they "work"?

As long as the gasket is for an '03-'04 2.0 it should work. The older gaskets are different, IIRC the NGC heads have revised oil or coolant passages. I think it was an oil feed? You could hold your old one up to the new to see if the holes can be changed enough in the gasket to accomidate the change. I believe there is a thread on modding the head to make them work, as long as the hole can be elongated slightly and still seal I think it will work. but without the two to compare ? I'm sure you don't want to tear your head off just to find out tho. I'm assuming by cometic (cosmetic) you're referring to the thinner style gasket?

No I mean Cometic.

I heard that the oil passages changed in only the late model dual cams like srts.

Is anybody using the cometic on their 03-05 2.0s that may know from experience?

You're thinking of the DOHC/2.4L. All the 2.0L blocks have the same head gasket.

My bad, I didn't recall correctly. :D

Then I don't know what the issue would be. Isn't the OEM head gaket also an MLS design? Other than the viton coating, what advantage does it have over the OEM piece?

"5014127AC Head gasket, all models - 2.0l sohc List Price $51.10"
But if you figure in the Mopar sealant the prices are about the same.

Unless there is something different about 2000-up blocks? This is assuming that the DOHC uses the same gasket.

As mentioned above, the SOHC(all) and early 2.0/2.4's all use the same head gasket...
I'm pretty sure 01+2.4's are the one's that are different because of the oil drain back hole being larger and oval'd....
That's why you can't put an early DOHC head on a late model block without mods...

Well once I get this head gasket I'll let you know how it fits up. This is the last thing I need for my build.

For reference: the OEM gasket thickness is 0.045" installed thickness.
So basically you shaved .005" just by changing the gasket
