Air intake/filter?

Post by sxt03 » Tue Jun 03, 2008 12:15 am

Whats a good air filter, or intake that i can throw onto my neon? Ive heard K&N is a big deal...buuut then again ive also heard another one called i think "iceman" is preety good as well. Any suggestions? How much would that run me? Id also like to hear it be a little throatier was well then i punch the gas. Today i took my air filter off and drove about a mile or so to see how it sounded and what not, i did notice it sounded deep and throaty as can be to throttle response, but i felt as thought i may have actually lost a bit of power. But who knows, maybe its just me.

Never run without an air filter. The air box will collect dirt and bugs in it. Instead of going to a full CAI most have had good results with the K&N air filter and removing the resonator box.

agreed on the whats said above, when I had my 00' SE just removed the resonator box to have a lil more air flow. Upgrading the filter works too.

Depending where you live you can suffer/gain from a CAI being sandy, dusty or real rainy, i now have an 03' R/T dropped an AEM CAI it was 288 w/ tax happy w/ results deeper sound and a lil whistle when I press the gas. but its also mix w/ a UDP as well.

But any CAI will work since anything will be better than our stock airbox
Heh.

alrighty appreciate it...couple of quick questions tho. (keep in mind im a newbie so bare with me) What is a CAI? And what is the difference between an "air intake" and an "air filter"? If i understand it correctly, air filter is just the cone, right?

Cold Air Intake, http://www.modernperformance.com, this is really good website for lil mods that work for your car.

The CAI replaces your whole filter box, you can check my garage and view vehicle, you will see pics before and after w/ the stock airbox and the actual AEM CAI.

After(no air filter box)

And yea the air filter is the lil cone mesh thing inside the airbox
Heh.

Ohhh, gotcha. Appreciate the pics man, helped me get a better understanding.

Today i bought a K&N filter from O' Reilly auto parts store (autozone didnt even have one for my make/model neon) it costed me 52$ and all i did was take the black cover off, removed the old cone filter and put the new one on. I drove with the black top of the box off for a bit with the new filter on and it sounds awesome. However, when i put the black top of the box back over the filter it sounds like its stock. Is it safe to drive with the box off of the filter? The only worry i would have is loss of power, simply because the filter is sucking hot air off of the engine, and not cold air. How much would it effect it to drive with the box off?

don't take the top of the box off. Look at your air box and you will notice a black plastic tube that goes down into the wheel well in front of the drivers side front tire. Crawl up under the car and have a look, there is a big plastic box in there that is like a muffler for your intake....remove it and you will have better sound. Keep that little black tube down into the hole though.

IIRC you will have to take off the right front tire (to make it easier to get in there) and there are like 3 bolts holding in the resonator.

Feel free to PM me if you want as I have an 03 sxt that I am building up as well.

Lol as soon as i was done reading that i hustled outside and started taking it apart. I had to take a couple of the plastic pins out of the rubber/plastic lining that protects the engine in front of the tire to get at it though. After i did that i took 3 screws out that held it in and what came out was a plastic box, and a small tube about 5inches long. Took it for a ride afterwards, and it did somewhat improve the sound, thanks for the idea :) And yeah, if i hit any bumps in the road (i know i will) i throw a PM your way.

did you keep that tube in the box that goes into the hole in the fender that connects to the box in the fender wall? You need to.

You don't have to take it off, if you turn the wheel all the way to the left you should be able to get it out. You just get more room when you take the tire off.

I didnt have to, but like racer said what you have to do is turn the wheel all the way to the left.
