#12 vs #14 crans, cams UDP Headers TB

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

#12 vs #14 crans, cams UDP Headers TB

Post by Addicted2Boost » Sun Jun 08, 2008 10:40 pm

I dont know to much about neon engine parts yet whats the difference between 12's and 14' crane cams of the two what one is better? As for adjustable cams what do these do how do you adjust them whats the benefit? The UDP how much of a difference do having these make? Headers Long or short also benefit of these? Is stock 2gen intake mani good enough whats a better one? The TB's is 52 enough or maybe a 60. Sorry for all the questions I learned about turbos and installed one because i asked questions.

the 14 is just a more aggressive cam then the 12, the 12 is more comparable to the 01 r/t cam

the adjustable cam gear will just help you fine tune timing of the cams

the udp will make a small difference, but research it because i believe the 01's were throwing a cel's

a long tube header you will sacrifice low end but gain more power up top but in most cases you need to remove the catalytic converter

the short tube will give you a few extra ponies and you can still use the catalytic converter

the stock plastic manifold flows very well but i would step up to a magnum manifold

since your is a pre 03 i would go with a 60mm tb...... it seems like most people on here get good results on the butt dyno

hope this helps a little

It's the '02's that throw a false misfire code.

Great thank you id rather ask on here because alot of you have gone thru this already. Allpar.com has alot of info about this stuff and what stages to do tings in too but I like a more personal approach. How about crane 22's?

With the MPx UDP on my 02SE I get the CEL. Its really infrequent though. If I hit above 5.5K it'll blink, but when I shift it stops. I haven't noticed a change in performance from it though.

My 02 never through a code with a UDP pully. It kept throwing belts so I took it off. Never realy noticed a differance.

Is this stuff for your turbo car or another car. I'm thinking your building a 1st Gen cause you asked about 22's.

If your building a 1ST Gen then there is much to learn about N/A You will soon discover that N/A is exspensive.
TurboNeonEs wrote:difference between 12's and 14' crane cams of the two what one is better??

they don't make 22's for a SOHC just the 005 and 007.
If you know what your doing Crower will do some nasty custom stuff for a SOHC. Differance from the two is lob size and duration the 14 is just a bigger/hotter cam.
TurboNeonEs wrote:As for adjustable cams what do these do how do you adjust them whats the benefit?
You reffering to "Cam gears" Cams are not adjustable. Basicaly with a Gear you can adjust the power band. For like a 14 you can bring the usable power for a 14 down into the RPM range of the stock computer. But you will lose some power compared to if you just used it in its designed power range.
TurboNeonEs wrote:Headers Long or short also benefit of these? ?
A short runner is tuned more for the low end of the RPM band. Due to that the higher RPM will suffer. A good LTH will not lose power on any RPM.

TurboNeonEs wrote:Is stock 2gen intake mani good enough whats a better one??
Realy any Mani is better then a stock one they flow like crap. Realy there is only custom options. AMM makes a nice manifold.
TurboNeonEs wrote:The TB's is 52 enough or maybe a 60. ?
If this is going on your Turbo car some would say bigger is better but there is a lot that goes into flow versus turbulance ETC. Do some looking on the net for that one way more to that then I could hope to cover.
TurboNeonEs wrote:Sorry for all the questions I learned about turbos and installed one because i asked questions.?
Nothing wrong with that We all learn that way. But the FAQ section of 2GN has a wealth of info you could spend hours reading and still not learn everything there is to learn.

good luck...... if you want that power just get a lth, cam, intake manifold, throttle body and a 50 wet shot and you could probably hit around that mark and it will save you a couple thousand

good luck getting that much power all motor, i only know of one person making that kind of power and hes got like 3 grand just in the head. 160-170 shouldnt be too hard, you could do that with a magnum head, crane 14, 10.5 to 1 compression pistons, adjustable cam gear, afxr, cold air intake, 60 mm throttle body, long tube header, and a good intake manifold. Even that's getting expensive though, ive got a similar setup, and have about 2 grand in it.

Don't do it, unless you're prepared to be dissapointed. Look at Sgt Brad. He has the baddest SOHC, and its a 2.2, and he's still not quite there yet.

If you want something interested, and fun:

Port and mill the head .030, throw in a crane 14, an AFX computer, a decent LTH and exhaust, and have fun. With a timing retarder, and a 50 shot you'd be quite happy with it.
