Cutting a coil off of my lowering springs - Need input

Have some questions about how to achive better handling and stopping power using different springs, upgrading to coilovers, questions on swaybars, bushings, different rotors, pads, ect... Having any steering problems or questions about steering racks, tie rods, tie rod ends, ect... ask these questions here.

Hey guys, I'm sick of how my front end isn't as low as the rear.. so it's time to fix it.

The plan:

**Note that the red area is the top of the spring**

The red area is the coil I'll be cutting off, I've read that a general rule is that removing one coil drops 1.5"-2" It needs to go down more than 1.5"

From what I remember I can spin the parts that hold the spring in place to accommodate if I end up only removing a portion of the coil vs. an entire coil.

I wouldn't recommend doing this but I'm confident I'll work, the hardest part is going to be testing it each time I cut a little off to try it.

oh god, please dont!

not only is it rice, its unsafe and can be rather dangerous to do so!

that coil you're going to cut off is there for a reason, thats the part of the coil that will sit flush with the top hat...cutting that off will cause the spring to NOT sit right!

Your rear is lower than the front? Are you sure, did you actually measure it?

Yeah, unless you flatten that top part off your shit will probably slip. And even then you'll probably ruin the structural integrity of the spring itself.

Just a little story of my experience with cut springs.

Some retarded kid with his mom's Cavalier decided to cut the coils much like you're considering.

He cut it, drove it 3 blocks, and it shifted. The edge of the spring dug into the tire and shredded it. So he put the spare on (backwards) and brought it into the tire shop I was working at. We took one look at it, and told him we couldn't do a tire for him because the same thing would happen. He insisted, and signed a waiver saying he had NO warranty on the tire he was buying if it was a sidewall puncture.

He signed, we did the work and moved the spring as much as we could when we put the new tire on. He didn't make it out of the parking lot before the spring shifted and shredded the new tire.

He didn't come back in.

I would say if you want the raise the rear, get some different lowering springs... it'll end up being cheaper than cutting coils.

good call random1, that'd be bad news if the spring came unseated.. i think that changes my mind right there, when the weight goes completely off of the strut assembly i could see it coming unseated now
