What to do with the rims over winter

Post by Mr Josh Zombie » Mon Jun 23, 2008 8:08 pm

So, i have mixed feelings on if I should powder coat my stockers over the winter, or leave them gunmetal. So, here's some half-assed photoshops and a poll to help me decide!

As it is now:

Black looks good, but my friend painted the SS wheels spokes/face black, and left the lip silver and it actually looked REALLY badass.

That pic above looks kinda cool! I don't like all-black wheels on ANYTHING...so I would do some kind of lip. The RK Sport lip wing looks DOPE, but obviously you're going to have to fill in the existing spoiler holes. Love the 'Balt!

Yes I LOVE the way that looks. I too dislike all black wheels they look dirty to me. A black wheel needs a lip to show that its meant to be black. Thats just my opinion though, if you like the all black wheels go for it. I think the lip looks killer. I would have done the centercap and lug nuts too.

Those wheels are way too big and the car is starting to look funny in all black. Everybody knows what it is you arent getting any kind of sleeper look with everything in black.

Dont take my opinion on looks too seriously though

You probably know what I'm going to say..................

Gloss black FTMFW!!!! The wheels do look big in stock trim, and the all black route makes them look like they belong there.

Besides, all black cars just look mean

I'm really diggin the black wheels. If you can get them to look the almost two-tone as in your chop, that would be sweet!

I like the black with the lip...

But since that's not an option, I'm voting for leave them gunmetal. Although slammed down the black looks better...

it's not an option because i don't want to paint the rims, i want something more perminant, and i also don't want to pay a premium just to get the wheels powder coated, which is what it would be required if i want to keep a lip of any sort. The place i'm going to would just charge me more, and i can't justify spending a lot of money of stock rims.

i'm surprised by the number of people that say go for the black though.

Buy new rims. Do what I did. HAve a set of summer tires with summer tread and a set of crappy wheels with winter tread. I see you like the stockers a lot, so maybe you can get a set of steelies for winter with good tread. Not fun having to swap out tires or use all seasonal tires while your nice rims get dirty/chipped.

One day i'll buy new rims as well, but I want to buy some damn nice ones though. Because of the weird ass bolt patten (it's 5x110) for cobalts, choices are extremely limited, and often a little expensive. I don't like them a lot, but they're not bad for stock rims I suppose, and the cost of taking off the tires, sand blast, powder coat, and re-mount is a 1/4 of the price of new rims and about 1/2 the price of the steelies I'm purchasing.

I'm buying 16" steelies for the winter. There's no WAY in hell I'm rolling on 18's in snow/ice... nooooo way.

Normally I hate all black rims on a black car, but your stock rims just look dumb. I like the silver rims on my Neon, though.

I say leave the way they are if strapped for cash; otherwise I'd vote for new wheels. Try photoshopping a set of 10-18 spoke wheels. I think the wheels you have are a little too chunky in the middle portion.

You could do what i did which is a polished face and the paint the lip black.
That depends if you have that much time and about 160 bucks handy.

haha, there's no way i'm doing what you did man. that's just crazy.

Cash isn't a problem right now, I just don't want to put good 18" tires to waste. If I buy new rims, they'll be some 5 spoke 16", MAYBE 17". 18's look fucking retarded on these cars, not to mention it's a "performance" vehicle..... i don't know they'd put 25lb rims on it.
