odd question....

Post by scneonchic » Mon Aug 01, 2005 8:43 pm

this might seem like an odd question, but im sick of painting the front of my car every 3 or 4 months....anyways....iim going to show about 2 hours away next weekend and i have to drive the interstate the whole way to get there. interstate = rock chips and bugs :(

so...i saw some ppl at HIN this year that had thier front end, headlights, and the fronts of the sideskirts taped up w/ blue painters tape to protect them. i never saw how the cars looked after they took the tape off. im just owrrieed about going to take the tape off and it damaging my paint.

i know its gonna look ghetto as anything, but if it will protect my front end the ride up to the show, im gonna do it, unlss there is another option someone on here might know about? an affordable option lol

i would do that, if i had my stock bumper....lol...its long gone, and the new one has never been taken off the car since the day it got put on.

do you know if the paint was okay after the tape was removed?

they call it painters tape because the sticky count is really low & works well on paint jobs (lol i dunno how else to word it). It wont leave sticky residue Your paint will be fine. Of course you could always get a truck & trailer

affordable being the key word....LOL

btw...nice paint job, you should get some gunmetal rims next :) would set off the trunk nicely.

is that painters tape they sell at like walmart and target and stuff okay? or should i go to a paint shop specifically for auto paint and get that type? thats the next part of my question. getting the correct painters tape, like is the house stuff okay or do i need the kind body shops use?

i called the guy that paitned my car and asked hima bout it, but he said he didnt know how well it would work, but that if i hit a rock bigenough, its going to chip through anyways...i understand that but i want to proteect it as much as posisble

the stuff at wally world will work... same stuff the body shop uses or you see on "pimp my ride"...

I used to use it on my 1st gen, no problems with paint... and I know classic hot rodders who use it with no problems...

have no fear.

and this is why 2gn.org is the best forum site, but yeah the painters tape should come off fine. I dont know bout protecting rocks but it should come off fine. why don't you wash a little spot on the bumper and put a peice of tape on there drive around for a day and see if it comes off fine and if it protects it at all.

I use a bra for my Neon when going to shows. Also, you can get headlight covers for the headlights. :)

I lived in florida once and when Love Bug season comes around Rice Zone sells this funny looking universal bra you can put on your front end. Looks like the material they use on a screen doors/ window.. Used it once on my Grandfather's Pathfinder and it worked great..

problem is...aftermarket bumper...no one makes bras for them. they would sell a ton if someone would just make them.

headlight covers, i cant get them here in time, and im not too worried about the headlights really...just the bumper itself.

i was thinking of getting some tape tomorrow and trying on a small section at the bottom, like you were saying, and see how wel it comes off and all that good stuff

It comes off no problem. I've used the blue painters tape on multiple neons that I've worked on and there has never been a problem. I had thought of doing a few shows at one point that would require a drive and this is the way I was going to go. You have nothing to worry about.

You could also buy 3M clear bra material and have a clear, stick-on cover that you can keep on year round without any problems. I've seen it in person and it isn't even visible until you're about two feet away. Even then, you can barely see it. You can buy universal kits and make your own bumper cover with it.

www.rockblocker.com carries it. Check it out.

Well i live in Louisiana and thanx to good ole yearly Love Bug Season, my front end on my 03 is ruined. It hasbug damage out of this world. Really don't want to put a bra on the car cause for one i don't like the way it looks, two i don't want any scratches or fading. I think once season comes around i'll make sure to wash it alot more often and also do a bit more waxing to help them come off and not do as much damage.

I've seen the screen stuff myself and from what i can tell it works out pretty good. Funny because some people just went to the hardware stores and bought screen and tape.........idiots

Try using a clay bar on the front bumper... Works nice with those embedded bugs.

I'll be replacing the front with an SRT front clip anyways in the spring after I get it and get it painted, etc.
