Grrtrude's value

Post by esteinmaier » Thu Jul 03, 2008 7:34 pm

As some of you know, about a month ago, Grrtrude got cracked into. The insurance company is trying to total her and give me $700. Obviously, this doesn't work. Some of you know Grrtrude a little bit, some of you have ridden in her, some of you have just seen photos and heard the stories of grandeur.

I'm just trying to get an idea of what you would realistically pay for Grrtrude, provided the damage to the rear had never been done. No interior, with the exception of the dash, and the 2 front seats.

Look at her value with the MS2 w/P&H running the engine, 1680cc injectors, return line, 1:1, all gauges, boost controllers, etc. Everything necessary to go too fast to be safe. Coilovers, and the stickiest street legal tires that exist, etc. Name a mod, and if it's not done, it's probably not necessary.

Give me some estimates of what you would pay for her. Also what you would pay with interior in the car.

Insurance company never lifted the hood, but they valued the car at $5600 with all of the interior in, but knocked off almost $4100 for the interior not being in it. So they are offering me $1620 for her, or around $700 if I buy her back with a salvage title.

My thought is that if I parted her, she would be worth somewhere in the range of 9-10k, as a whole car, 7-8k. A far cry from $1620.

Do it, you aren't going to get very far with it in it's current condition. I would just take the $700, and the car. Part it out, or just rebuild her, if she is rebuildable. Or put the motor/trans into a first gen!!!

im with him. I say take the car and part it out. Insurance companies dont know what the hell they are talking about.

If you can rebuild it do it. If not at least you got to keep your stuff

I'm with Lambo. altho they shouldn't be deducting for not having the interior in. do you have the interior?

they should be paying on what they charged you for insurance, which is a stock whatever trim line car. what you've done to it shouldn't make a difference in insured value unless you got it adjusted.

I'm with you, but they are totalling it based on these numbers:

Car is worth $5600 with no damage.
Missing interior is valued at $4000 of "pre-existing damage"
Car is worth $1600 for resale
Damage is $2148
Damage>Value=total loss

I've actually got it arranged to be reappraised. So I can throw most of the interior in it, and then the pre-existing damage number goes down, making the effective value of the car higher. That makes the equation balance out like this:

Value>Damage=$2148 claim payable.

So what that means is I should be able to get $2148 back on it, and then rebuild it how I see fit. Seeing as I have some of the replacement parts already, that should be minimal.

I'm crossing the fingers. I should get my own appraisal and an attorney and go to town on these pieces of work, but I just want to be made whole.

They only look at "fair market value" If the car was for sale it wouldn't fetch much w/out an interior to your average buyer. My insurance tried the same crap, because I had removed the radio, and some other things before they towed it to the body shop for damage estimates. They decided to total it and based the value on the missiing parts. I told them I had those parts and removed them to prevent theft while it was sitting in a lot somewhere. They readjusted the value, tho not anywhere near market value. You get hosed anyway you cut it. Your either taking less than it can be replaced, or paying a lawyer.

Wow, thats crazy...

I was involved in an accident about 3 weeks ago (finally got my car back yesterday). My car is an 03 with roughly 70,000 miles on it.

My damage, and this is pretty much all suspension, was about $3,000. I was worried that were going to total car, but insurance, and the body shop said the car was far from being totalled out.

$4,000 for an interior is very high, unless if you had a $1,000 subwoofer box, $1,000 subwoofer, and $1,000 amplifier. The last $1,000 should cover all the interior bits and pieces...

Call them up, get it re-appraised, and get the lawyer, thats bullshit.

Pssh, IIRC the feakin' headliner lists for over $1000, now that's crazy! They totalled mine out for a wasted hood, fender, radiator, and part of the core support. No frame or suspension damage.

Don't feel bad, my 2002 R/T:
Condition Value

Excellent
$4,450

Good
$4,045

Fair
$3,370
Thats not taking into consideration the engine only has 15,000, the trani is a few months old, it has $2000+ worth of front end modifications, and anything else on the car....
Every time I do a major exterior mod I contact the insurance company and update the car's profile and pictures this way I don't get F'd if an issue happens......
For Ex:
SRT hood - $1000
SRT-D fascia - $750
(paint and materials extra)
03+ projectors - $300
HID conversion - $250
Its stuff like that that makes the difference. Otherwise there going to look at trade in value through KBB.com and base things from there. Also note, when the Insurance company looks up prices on parts, the use FULL retail list price, not discount prices. And if they state they will fix the car, instead of using a $500 fascia they will get a recon $250 fascia to save money.....

^ That's smart. I need to contact my insurance company and add all my parts. I wonder how expensive it will be though.

Awesome! I should try that. I got confirmation today though that they are sending me $2148.03 and it's not a total anymore. It's amazing what a difference an interior makes.
