Opinions on rim/tire sizes.

Post by 2005.Neon.SXT » Sat Jul 12, 2008 4:38 pm

So I wanna get a set of rims that look good, not too small, but not big where it's a hindrance to speed. I also wanna get a good set of tires to wrap around these rims, but I don't really have the slightest clue what kind are good for the Neon (I know which number relates to the rim size, that's about it).

Any help? Suggestions on Rim size and what kind of tire sizes you guys are using? I haven't decided on what kind of rim, but I was just wondering what you guys thought or what you guys are using. I'm mostly going for handling at the moment, won't be turboing for at least another year.

Thanks :)

Well, I went with 17s when I bought mine. In hindsight, I would have bought 16s. 16x7 are usually a great combo for handling and looks. I dont really like the look of aftermarket 15 inch wheels with huge, meaty tires.

ya, I also forgot to mention I wanna try and get as low-profile tire as I can. I'm just going to use my stock rims with some winter tires for the winter time, so I wouldn't mind getting some low-profile tires with good grip.[/quote]

17x7" rims and 205/40/17 tires worked for me, as far as handling and appearance. Depending on the manufacturer, you might be able to get away with a 205/45/17, or a 215/40/17, but I personally wouldn't want to risk it and find out the hard way...

I suggest getting 17 X 7 with 205 40 17 just like Iowa said. If you get them and you have stock struts, they will probably be the biggest wheels you can get without rubbing.

Sweet, thanks for all the replies.

I planned on getting coilovers. If I were to get bigger rims and tires to fill the space in my wheel well, would that be better? Just sticking with stock struts?

Well if you stick with stock struts, you won't be able to "fill" the wheel-well up any more than you already are... 205/40/17 is about the biggest you can go, and they're the same outer diameter as the stock tires are. IMO, going to 17"s actually makes the gap in the wheel well look worse, and makes our cars look "taller" than they should be. Another reason why you see most people here lowering their cars, not only handles better but it looks better as well.

Yea, so would 16" Rims + some low profile tires be good? If I'm going to get coilovers? I'm not worried about a body kit right now, and if I were to get anything it'd just be a lip kit. But I don't plan on turboing for a while so I'm not worried about kits or exhaust right now, just want the car to handle better. I wasn't much for the 17" Rims.

Thanks :)

16"s are fine... I have 17's, but if I had to do it again I think I would have gone with 16's...

You can fit 18" wheels without rubbing. I don't recommend it, though. Go with 15s or 16s. I don't mind the look of my stock 16s, if only my car was lowered.....

I went with 16x7 rims with a 38mm off-set. and got Kumho 215/50/16 tires. I have stock rear suspension... here's how close the clearance is. I did not use any wheel spacers... it doesn't rub, it's just close to that rear/bottom-stablizer bar...
