So Im need to upgrade

Post by jetas » Tue Jul 15, 2008 12:48 am

My alternator. Ive read the alts in neons built after a certain date have a higher output. My question is how do i figure out if it was made after that date. And also if alts from another car will be a basic drop in replacement. Or atleast as minimal mods to the brakets or belts. I know someone here has to be able to chime in on this. I need to know this by the end of the week so i can know what to look for. Thanks all

Someone has a link to a website with the pt alternators...im pretty sure some of them are only 100 but one of the models/years has 120 amp. I got it for mine and its an exact fit, just more copper winds in it. Unfortunately i do not recall which year i got it from.

on the back of your drivers doorsill theres information on the car and when it was built. you can also goto www.dodgeparts.com and state you have a 05 neon and order it though them. double check the part# and make sure its different from the '04's or ask for the part# on the forum for asking for part#'s

Alright but would a 120a be enough? Cuz im only pushing about 250wRMS to the sub and lights dim like crazy. I dont want to get an alt bigger than wat i need because im not going to upgrade that for a while

lol i have a ~1800w rms (between the 3 amps) with my 120a and the lights dim when i have it cranked up all the way, but at the level i normally have it at the lights dont dim at all. so im sure a 250w will me more than enough, then again i also have these things installed.

Big3
2 1Farad Caps
i had my headlights replaced with HID's so i save some draw there

still without any of these just the 120a will be more than enough. you might want to do the big3 also it makes a huge difference. the A/C runs cooler, i noticed the RPM's climb a little easier, the car also seems alot more stable electrically.

i didnt, the - side is more important because electricity flows form - to + and (almost) everything in the car goes to the chasis for ground

u should get no dimming at all if ur just running 250w rms....i ran 1600 + another 200 +/- a few watts and my life only dimmed bad when i was fully cranked...but even with the subwoofer controls set to 0...it wasn't dimming.

double check ur connections to ur battery....recheck ur grounds

where did u ground ur amp too?

well the cars a unibody so there's not really any good spots....but after lots of testing i found that if u take off the back seat...the part u sit on....mount it there.....but beware of the gas tank!

that has been the best place to ground that i have found.

or the other day i seen that they grounded the tail lights i think on the left and right sides of the back fenders...if u pull back the carpet, you should see them there.

i tell u where grounded it was by the rubber black plugs that the bottom part of the seat locks into...... be sure u scrape the paint away so u have a nice connection.

i never tried it up by the seat belt bolts....but knock on it, make sure it sounds like metal and is not covered by any of that sound deadener that came with the car..should look like metal but when u knock on it it sounds like plastic or something else
