not turning on

Post by danc » Mon Jul 28, 2008 7:24 pm

hey guys I'm new here and quite new to cars in general  (didn't know where to post this)I have 2001 neon and I'm having quite a challenge with it. I bought this car about 2 months ago and nothing but problems ever since, the main thing is, the first time i turn it on in the day it cranks right up, ok so the problem starts when i go to turn it on for the second time after i park it somewhere it wont turn, i have to let the engine cool of then it turns on. I check the battery and it passed,i changed the starter but still the problem does not go away, i took the thermostat out because it would heat up in 5 min. It seems its running rich because i notice one of the holes where the spark are has oil leaking into it, people told me thats not why its not turning on, and i know i shouldn't be running it rich but don't know how to fix the problem.

can anyone help me?

I'm by no means an expert, but I've heard people around this great site say before, check your ground cable. So I'd say start there.

I've recently had that issue, sucks royal donkey ****. I changed everything from new terminal posts, wire to starter and then said what the hell re-wire the ground system and boom car started. Of course then the coil went but thats a different story.

I back up the ground wire idea

First off, by not turning do you mean it won't engage the starter or it cranks, but won't fire up?

If it is the first one then the grounds may be bad. If the latter, your fuel pressure may be a little low or bleeding off causing the hot start issue. Could be caused by a dirty/faulty injector, thus the rich issue. If the pressure is not staying within spec, the fuel may be boiling in the rail/lines. Or the coil may be going, not having enough umph to fire the plugs when hot. for the spark plug oil issue the tubes are coming lose. Search "spark plug tube" for a few threads on reparing that problem, or take it to a competent shop to have them resealed or better replaced. If the wires are original I would also replace them with quality wires. If you opt for Autozone go with the bosch wires they are far better than the wells or duralast wires, and they have a lifetime guarantee. The ones on my GF's car are over 7 years old and still going strong.

Possibly the ASD relay? Not sure if that would keep the starter from engaging though.

No but the starter relay might be getting weak, don't know that the under hood temps would affect it enough tho. Try switching it with the horn relay, if checking/cleaning all the grounds/leads to the engine and starter don't help. When it won't start, also get a test light to see if the solenoid lead is getting power. If it isn't energized then it would be in the starter relay circuit. If it is then it is either in the heavy wiring/ground or a defective starter. New isn't always a gaurantee of function.
