UDP Bolt Stuck

Post by kc2005ptgt » Fri Aug 01, 2008 2:25 am

Ok - stupid problem, and I need an answer to it cause I can not find it...

My UDP bolt is tuck, and nothing will break it loose. I took it off one time before with an electric, 240 ft/lbs impact wrench and installed it back with the same wrench... then I didn't get it all the way on and installed it further with my mechanics impact wrench (torque unknown). Now, nothing will break it loose, not my impact wrench (new, 300 ft/lbs on 3/8" hose at 90 PSI at 25') and it won't budge... do I need a bigger hose, like 1/2"? Bigger, badder impact wrench in the 500+ ft/lbs range? I am afraid of jacking this up because I am down to the wire on money and wife will murder me if I spend any more  This rebuild is costin gin the area of $1200, so no more moolah!

One more question... does the bolt go "lefty-loosey" like a normal bolt? Just checking, don't want to find out I have been trying to tighten it instead of loosening it.

I would use a breaker bar but then you run the risk of snapping the bolt.

Yeah, that bolt is on tight, and there was nothing used on it (thread lock, no!), and it did not get cross-threaded. When I broke it loose last time I just used the electric impact wrench and whammo, came right off. I am gonna stop by the mechanics tomorrow and borrow his impact wrench and see it that works as well as buy a new hose that is 1/2".

Wow...what in the hell. I remember you saying the last time something about putting it in gear so it doesn't spin or what not?

Maybe try turning on the car and letting it spin or something...shit I have no idea why it's locked up like that. Let the engine get hot?

BTW why are you taking it off? Going back to stock?

Damn. I'm thinking a more powerful impact is your best bet. Like adionik mentioned, was the engine warmed up?

Yeah, the UDP is metal, right? You should be fine with that. When I was tearing apart the engine I had a torch handy for a large portion of it. Really makes things easier when you heat up the bolts.

If all else fails heat it and use a deep well impact socket, so it clears the UDP, and put a pipe wrench with extension pipe on the socket. Then you won't need to worry about breaking the breaker bar. Also have a helper smack the pipe wrench with a hammer while pulling on the pipe.

Retard. :tardbang: :beatstick: :violent1: :chair:

(j/k!)

I have done stoooopid shyt too .....
Best one, was when I was working in an auto shop, as a stoooopid young man.
I was using a shop impact gun to remove the lug nuts on my 1968 Chry.New Yorker.

The passenger side lug nuts and rims came off fine.
The Driver's side lug nuts, would not budge.

The other guys in the shop KNEW what the problem was, but they didn't tell me.... until after maybe 20 min., one of them took pity upon my stooopid (ignorant) @$$ and showed me what i was doing 'wrong'. :confused2:
He told me to REVERSE the impact gun... and the lug nuts came right off !

Lesson learned: OLDER Mopars (Pre-1971) had Left-Hand Threads on the driver's side lugs. :tardbang: :tardbang: :banghead:

Yes, i felt retarded. :tardbang:

Oh I thought he just meant he used the momentum of spinning the UDP one direction to fight against him unscrewing the bolt to double his force.

I broke some dumb Taiwanese shit once trying to tighten my oil pan bolt instead of loosening it. Socket, socket drive, and an adapter from 3/8"-1/4". But not all at the same time. Then I realized since I was upside down, everything was backwards. Or something.
