Srt-4 intercoolers on atx neons

Post by LionheartedSXT » Wed Aug 13, 2008 1:06 pm

Yea so the way I'm looking at it, none of these types of intercoolers will fit (on the outlet side that is)with the oil pan for the transmission in the way...not to much clearance there, anyone have any alternate ideas on what intercooler to run or had experience with this problem on an atx?

Thanks in advance...

i used the srt IC when my car had an atx. yes, it was a bitch.

i used the stock IC piping (since it is flexible) and got it in there the best i could with the addition of another hard pipe to make it to the TB. so it can be done.

however...i would suggest going with a different IC that has an outlet coming straight out, as opposed to turning into the engine bay.

What about if I shortened the cold side of the stock intercooler? Like let say I cut off half of that pipe that goes through the radiator support, would there possibly be a better fit for a custom cold pipe, or is it not a good idea?

May be hard to see, but here was my solution.

I cut the coldside off, welded a plate of aluminum over it, cut a hole in the side, and welded the coldside outlet on the side. It actually is VERY convenient there, it allowed me to put a 90* bent pipe on the coldside, then hooked it up to my old CAI. Fit perfect.

Here's a pic.

Hmm...I like your idea, and its really smart. I would just rather run a cold air over there. Not an srt-4 one becuase it won't fit, but a custom one. Because that look is pretty clean to me. I just want everything to come out to a clean look. I might buy a stock IC and try and think of some ideas for this. But I do appreciate you guys contribution to this thread. I just want to find other ways to make it easier for people in the future that try to boost automatic neons without too much customization.

Yes, I forgot to mention that in my first post...that is what I did. I took about 1 1/2" off. Just be careful not to take too much. Your coupler still needs to have a good seat so it doesn't pop off during boost. Cut it off before it starts to taper to a bigger size so you have a flat area to get your coupler on.
