What is it with Junk Yards?

Post by PioneerUrban » Fri Aug 15, 2008 7:27 pm

I finally found a hood for my car. The only undamaged hood in my region.

Anyway, the donor Neon had some good vent visors on it and some good wiper arms, that my sons Neon could use. So, I offered the guy $20 for those items. Well hell, from his reaction you would've thought I was taking the last bit of food from his table. He said that "Those wiper arms are worth $20 a piece and the vent visors are worth such and such."

It's a freaking WRECKED car! I'm doing him a favor by even going out there in the first place!

These people were complete asswipes from the get go. I don't understand it. I'm their customer, why treat people like crap?

What hapened to the good old days, where you could take your tool kit and wonder around the junkyard all day looking for stuff you like and getting it for a bargain?

I could spend an entire weekend doing that.

Depends on the yards you go to.

How to fix your car:
1. Buy a Haynes manual
2. Read Haynes maual
3. Read and search appropriate threads, trust us, it's been covered before
4. Fix car
5. Consume beer of job well done

I've had very similar experiences before. Some of these guys are just pricks, so I like to argue with them and waste their time. I had to waste time driving there so it's only fair.

There are only a few pick and pull yards around here, and it's usually $5 to get in. Try and talk to one of the guys that strips the cars, most of the time they will get the part you want dirt cheap. Just have to wait outside the yard and give them some cash.

I've gone to a coupla junk yards in this area...

Prices were very reasonable at both but the supply of Neons to pick parts from was rather sparse at both as well

At one of the yards I had to sign-in before they let me roam the yard on my own. Stop at the office on the way out to sign-out and pay for any parts picked up.

At the other yard one of the fellows drove me around in their yard beater and assisted with removing the parts. Nice to have the assistance but I'd rather roam on my own. I was just waiting for the engine in that beater to blow up at anytime while we bounced around the yard.

If they ask what I think are unreasonable prices I'll leave the parts on the counter, thank them for their time and walk away... might as well get new parts at an auto store or dealership.

There's one place around here that lets you wander around. I'm nice to the guy, so if I don't find what I need he'll give me a free pass to get in next time ($1 value). Deals galore, too. Also makes jokes and such. Sadly they only have a bunch of 1st gens with no engine parts remaining, and 1 2nd gen that I've got everything of value except the spoilerless trunk lid (next week). All the other yards around here are owned by pricks.

I've got a few to choose from but only one that has 2gns. They're good friends with my father, sometimes they ask for a little much for small stuff, but when we need bigger items like doors, motors, whole cars, they usually give us a great deal.

I love the ones that pull out the book and go "this part cost $XX.XX new, so we'll sell it to you at 50% off list. I just ask them if they'll garantee it has 50% of the life left in it, and tell them to keep it.

NickKo and I go to a place out here, Pick and Pull. It's $1 to get in, and you wander the yard on your own. They have engine hoists and heavy duty wheel barrows to use (n/c), all the cars are raised about 2' off the ground, and their prices are all preset at reasonable levels. Plus, every Wednesday is 50% off, and they have some weekends with the same deal. Most small stuff, they don't even charge for, such as the 1gn hood latch I got for my son's car yesterday.
There are also a few U Pull It yards north of here that we hit occasionally, but some of them are a bit expensive, thinking their stuff is worth gold values.

Very True.

Most yards and junkyard operators that I have dealt with are actually pretty decent.
Even if they are expensive, at least they are not rude with customers.

Fortunately, rudeness is the exception ......
Sometimes, I run into counter guys or junkyard operators who are just crabby and cranky all the time, (perhaps because they don't get any?)

If the cranky guys STOPPED to THINK about it, maybe the reason they CAN'T get any is because they are cranky and crabby all the time !!

The junk year near me has a bunch of first gens. I was lucky to find a 2gn. I couldn't tell it was an 2gn at first till I looked inside of it. It was smashed pretty bad. But I got an HVAC bezel that was in the trunk for $7. Then I ruined it trying to paint it. :banghead:

I will be replacing mine soon.
If you are interested, I can sell you my "old" ones, but they have some fogging and 1 mounting bracket is split ..... I can take pics and send them, let me know.

seat

Post by Bluerocketsneeks » Sat Sep 06, 2008 9:32 pm

theres an 01 wrecked R/T with leather at the junk yard down the road

i asked the guy how much he wanted for the seats

$600 for front and back

i told him i could get new two tone leather katskins for cheaper than that

he told me to go do it than

its really upsets me because the windows are broken and that interior is just going to rot

i dont think anyone would pay half that for 7 year old used seats out of a wrecked car... not to mention they were covered in broken glass

Get ready to hate me at the u-pull I go to
Seats $10 each
Good engine $175
Bad engines up for part out
Trans $75
I have filled up a neon a couple of times and have yet to spend more than $60. She did charge me $26 for a throttle body yesterday but I was wet and cold (junkyarding in the rain FTL) and not in the mood to bargin

The other one around here is great they let me(and not too many other people) go in and pick around for stuff he still wont sell me the 90% complete DOHC MTX coupe though

The only reason I would go to a yard would be if I had a shot at finding either an SRT or an RT/ACR. Why would I need more base model parts when I have the whole catalogue already installed sitting in my garage right now!?

but you don't have a "base model"... you have an SXT

I have a base model, and I would go to get...for example.. SXT stuff...fuel rail cover...trunk pop...power windows...power locks...cruise control....etc...

I am lucky if I can find a 2nd gen as well here. Its pretty retarded when it comes to finding one here. I usually have to go around to at least two maybe even three to find what I want.
