yeah i meant bumper covers. (the part you can see) the bumper enforcement is behind the bumper cover and i think you could call it your crash bar? oh well, and yes, the bumper covers on neons are plastic FOR SURE. so i'm not sure what would weigh less if you got a fiberglass bumper cover soley for racing...Danteneon wrote:I'm confused by that part. Are you referring to the reinforcement, or the bumper? And what was the "Not necessarily..." in reference to?excon wrote:Not necessarily...Danteneon wrote:Nothing like that, but most folks opinion (here anyway) will lean towards not liking the bodykit idea. More folks lean towards the "function over form" way of doing things. A bodykit is a visual mod that does nothing for the car performance-wise. Not to say the Mopar side skirts and lipkit aren't only visual (because they are) but with the Chrysler parts you get a much better fit and finish without making your car scream "Hey, look at me!"
Just my take on it.
Just like you said, the bumpers are made of fiberglass. On some cars (definately not first generation neons) the bumpers are made of aluminum or metal and fiberglass is much lighter, but much more brittle if you hit something (or are hit). As for fitment, yes, you'll probably have issues installing it because an aftermarket company mass produces bumpers for many makes. I've seen a body kit on ebay for a neon, and the next day saw the same thing on a focus!
Another reason people get body kits is for aerodynamics, but I doubt that any of the companies that make these kits have ever put it on a neon and put it in a wind tunnel to see if it produces less drag and/or downforce at speed...
stick with your stock neon body... you'll be happy you did...
The bumper covers (the part you can see) is plastic...1st or 2nd gen. The bumper reinforcement is metal...1st or 2nd gen. The bodykits don't replace the reenforcement, but simply mount either over your factory bumper, or attach to the factory locations in place of your bumper. Some kits do require you to remove your reinforcement to mount them...don't buy those! That would constitute an insurance non-payment if it were seen after an accident.

The guys on here are right tho, ill vouch for saying that the kit does ALOT the change the look of the car, its the subtle things that do go a long way

The factory bumper cover doesn't weigh very much at all. The fiberglass covers weigh more than the factory part does.
If you spend more for the higher end kits, they are made like the factory parts out of plastic and not only weigh less than fiberglass but take impact much better as well.

If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

Mine cost nothing to paint. I bought a Bright Silver kit, then bought a Bright Silver Neon!
however, I can't see it costing that much to paint. It would be less than a body kit anyway. All I did was paint the indentation in the back of mine matte black with a can of DupliColor and it came out awesome!

Mopar lip kit FTW
Body kits to me really don't look good because i have yet to see one that flows with the lines of the car. They are usually way over done and just stick out way too much. Maybe its just me i don't know
But no matter what you decide on as long as its painted before you put it on it should look good.

yes definitely get it painted before... it's just the right way of going about doing it. And if you've never painted before, just take it to a reputable body shop to paint it. The lip kit shouldn't cost that much to paint, but that is depending on how expensive Electric Blue paint is as well.

just saying my input that bodykits arent bad they just give u a better outlook of the car and appearance.
my evo kit wasnt that hard to get on and i molded the fedners too and its all intack and in perfect lining.
but lip kit isnt that bad.
p.s just giving my input of working with a bodykit.

Yep, just look around. Several people on here have mismatched lip kits. Try the search function. I think there is an Atlantic Blue with either a silver or black kit. Nitehawk has a black car with a silver kit. If I were you I'd just color match it because it looks pretty stupid usually.
Here's an OB with a black lip kit:
